hangouts and default contact pic

So I've got android version 4.4.4 and one of the things I'm liking is that in gmail and the dailer it defaults to an initial if you don't have a photo set. Hangouts doesn't do this, just uses the same old grey face icon. Since I really don't want to go to the trouble of setting an icon for each contact and the grey face bugs me is there an alternative app out there that's any good?

I was using hello SMS but it does this wonky thing with picture messages.

I've been using 'UberSync Facebook Contact Sync' to sync my FB friends profile pictures with contacts - this also transfers over to Hangouts. The only downside I've noticed is if you have merged SMS/Hangouts Messages, Hangouts may try to use the default grey face. But since I only uses Hangout for SMS, never really been a problem.
