Hangouts Google Voice Integration

It seems to be pretty reliable (and good audio quality!) from my tests. I've only got two issues with it:

1) It can't be set as the default dialer yet.

2) Incoming calls ring both Hangouts and the standard Phone app. It seems to be a bit of a race to see which one rings first. Back in the days when I tinkered with various VoIP options, I used some Tasker hackery to avoid this conflict by way of disabling the cellular radio while connected to Wi-Fi. I hope that Google can work up a more elegant solution. Automatically ringing *only* Hangouts while I'm signed in and connected would be pretty sweet.

YES, audio quality is very good (and low latency too).

1. Yeah, noticed that. What I would like to see them do is integrate XMPP into the stock Google dialer, like they already have for SIP-based VoIP. Let the user configure whether they want it to ask dialing method on each call, always one way or the other, or have the outdial method dependent on whether they are connected to data or wifi.

2. I don't have that issue (and I tested for it after reading your post). Have you checked the Google Voice website to ensure you don't have anything checked for forwarding destinations? That said, I do wish they would allow selection of ringtone for GV incoming calls.

GV is the only number I hand out, so I do have it forwarding to my mobile number as well as to hangouts. I totally get why it's ringing both destinations. I don't want to disable the forwarding in case I'm not connected to data.

That's what I do too. It's on business cards & such so I want to keep that # separate from my actual VZW # so for me I need the ability to start a SMS conversation from my GV or from my VZW number. That seems to be the one glaring hole I see in the new update so far for me.

I haven't found any updated or official data, but I did find a post on the Google product forums that suggested an average of about 0.75MB/minute.

For call usage:

Here are approximate values for data consumption of the most common codecs used for VoIP:
G.711 - 87Kbps
G.729 - 32 Kbps
G.723.1 - 22 Kbps
G.723.1 - 21 Kbps
G.726

One issue I'm seeing when I receive a call to the GV #, when I answer, it seems to delay by about a minute or so before the caller hear me. Does anyone else notice this and are there any solution for it?

I haven't encountered that yet - but I also don't really make or receive all that many calls. I'll try to do some testing on it today :D

I've noticed once I swipe to answer the call, my screen is blank, when the head looking icon appear, that is when the caller can hear me. It's more between 1/2 - 1 minute when the delay happens.

Sorry, work happened yesterday so I didn't have a chance to do any testing. I'll try again today, but can't make any promises.

There's been an update in the Play store every day for the past 3 days. I've taken each one, but never noticed much difference (and of course, Google doesn't provide a changelog :motz:)
