Help Hangouts Question

Newbie
I decided to give Hangouts a try and to my dismay it added about 100 new contacts to my phone. I didnt send any texts and received only one, although I did have a few archived texts. Did it search all my old emails - some of the data I recognized. I have a Note 4 and was using Hangouts 3.3. Is this normal Hangouts behavior?

Yeah, I think it's because it allows contact via Gmail address or by phone number (with Hangouts Dialer and Google Voice anyway).

On your phone's regular contacts app, check in the settings - there's usually an option to only go with contacts with phone numbers.

Won't change Hangouts but will restore sanity to your phone.

Thanks for the reply. FYI, I had a real problem trying to deleat the extra contacts. To delete the Contacts I had to power off the phone immediately after deleting, then I had to wipe the Cashe Partition, otherwise, like a zombie, the Contacts would come back!

HO's can be a pain with contacts. Google likes to think I want everyone, everywhere, listed. I don't. It's one of the reasons I stopped using it. I'm hoping 4.0 is better but am not getting my hopes up. I really, really just want to use it for SMS/MMS with Google Voice integration but not for GV voicemail. Yeah. That's not happening I don't think.

Did you check settings in the actual phone dialer settings as EarlyMon suggested? There should be a setting to show contacts with phone numbers only, or something similar.

Is it actually adding contacts or just pulling up suggestions from G+? Or is it just finding all the people you ever emailed with?

I have checked my GMail account and none of the new Contacts are there. I think Hangouts it is finding people I have emailed and also finding addresses from emails that have been sent to me; some of the Contacts copied to my phone were people I do not know but were contained in address lists of emails sent to me. I think these Contacts are now stored within Hangouts. I can block these new Contacts from showing as EarlyMon suggested but I wanted to delete them from my phone. One way to block them from showing is to delete them using my default Contacts app and then use another texting app and not Hangouts. If I don't use Hangouts the new Contacts do not show, but then as soon as Hangouts is opened they're back. Anyway, I'm through with Hangouts unless I can find a way to stop it from adding new Contacts to my phone.

I finally found out where Hangouts got the Contacts it added to my phone. In addition to GMail I also have a hotmail account. I was sent an email to my hotmail account that had a large distribution list. Well, Hangouts copied every email address from that distribution list to my phone, and, I could not delete them. Also, Hangouts looked in every folder in my Hotmail account and copied every email address it could find, some as old as 10 years, to my phone. Hangouts copied approximately 500 email addresses and put them in my phone as Contacts. I did not know Hangouts would do this; now I know!! So, if like me, you're going to give Hangouts a trial run, beware.
I was finally able to delete the contacts added to my phone by going through all my hotmail folders and deleting all my old emails.
