I'm fairly sure they can tell if it's rooted. All they would have to do is just unbrick it and use a app that checks for root. BUT, they may just fix it and charge you if they find it's rooted. Worth a shot to send it in though.
Will it matter? If warranty is over, they'll charge whether you're rooted or not. Being rooted doesn't mean they will not accept repairs, it just means they'll charge you.
