"Harder" Soft Buttons

OK. Let me start by saying my AT&T Captivate's 4 capacitive buttons are broken broken broken times infinity. I am not interested in fixes for them, this is not the discussion at hand here.

What I AM looking for is a set of soft buttons similar to Virtual Button Bar or Button Savior except not quite so "soft". Overlays are infuriating, having to click to pop-out something is infuriating.

All I want is a simple bar of small icons at the bottom of my screen that are permanently and always there forever ever ever all the time always AND... (and this is the part where all the softbutton apps seem to fall right on their faces) because the bar is always always always out... I need something that is going to SHRINK the available desktop area so that nothing is going BEHIND it.

Does such an app even exist? This seems like such a simple thing you would expect to be supported in Android itself but it seems to not be the case.

Running Gingerbread on AT&T Captivate.

Wouldn't that be.... oh I don't know.... the exact opposite of what I'm looking for? The idea is to keep my phone.

Are you rooted? I've seen a few softkey apps but they require root for full functionality. Here's the first one I found.

I don't own a Captivate but there's always the option to flash an ICS rom that has softkeys if one is available for your device. It might be overkill of a solution but I just thought I'd throw it out there.
Yes I'm rooted and can flash custom roms if necissary. I don't find any apps that really meet my needs. I'm actually seriously considering switching to CodenameAndroid given the lack of other options. That particular APP you linked to I have tried.

Ah. I'm not sure how far along development is for the Captivate with Gummy, but I use it on my Droid X and it has the ability to toggle on and off softkeys. I think most ICS roms have at least a patch for softkeys. It's at least something worth looking into.
