Has anyone else cut the landline off completely?

The landline could have just as easily been knocked out (if not easier) so how is it a handicap???:confused::confused::confused:

In his situation, it wasn't useless.

I haven't had a landline since 2004. However, when I find my own place again, I'll have one for emergencies. I'm willing to pay another ~$30 a month for peace of mind.

I use VoIP over cable for calls at home and have a geographic number which has my local predial. I have a Siemens Gigaset phone with a couple of handsets which is just like a normal DECT cordless phone but with IP. I'm thinking of losing the landline but my only concern is that if the VoIP company goes bust I'd lose the number.

I always heard you could still dial 911 on a disconnected land line. as its an emergency service and they have to provide it to you even if you don't have phone service.

if really worried about it. you can always program your local 911 office to your cell phone. I am sure they would give you the actual number.

I got rid of my land line long ago. I just saw it as a waste of money for what they charged and hardly used it beings I have a cell now.

But hey to each their own. there is no wrong answer to this.

I switched to the combined cable (TV) /phone/Internet service about 3-4 years ago. Was paying $70/month for 512M internet and analog cable then $40 to the phone company for a land line without even long distance. Cable company offered their deal of phone service with unlimited long distance, digital cable, one receiver and 2M internet for $89 so we switched. Added another receiver and upgraded the other to a DVR but still under $100 before taxes.
Their phone service is not IP based, its layer two (datalink), really just another mux'ed channel like the cable so it doesn't suffer from any of the QoS services that VIOP had. We have had much better service from them then the phone company who became part of AT&T and then we had outages and dropped calls all the time (yes dropped calls on a land line).

My wife and I got rid of our land line several years ago. A cell carrier, Fido, was offering unlimited local calling for $40 per month at the time. We got rid of our land line and switched both of your cell phones to that plan.

The great thing about switching is that number of telemarketing calls we got have greatly reduced to almost nothing. We got a few when we subscribed to a long distance service for a little while. Other than that, one survey. It's the best thing about getting rid of your land line.

The only down side is that we have to bring our phones into whichever room we are in. I remember the first time I was in a different room than my cell. No longer do we have a phone in the three main rooms we are in. My wife still misses calls because she is too lazy to run to her phone at times.

Yep, ever since me and my wife got cell phones, we totally did away with our landline. There is really no point in having one now.

we do not use landline since (let me remember) 2005. I use skypeout - you just pay annual fee and call for cheap. if you only call within US, they have US subscription, but we use it because we call frequently to Europe.

I also hate contracts so we just use t-mobile prepaid cards. if you spend $100, you'll get gold status, your minutes will be cheaper and you do not need to refill for one year. You can buy cheap refill cards on ebay (last time I bought 50 card for 30)
