Has anyone else had their Dolphin Browser hijacked?

The_Chief

Accept no imitations!
Something VERY BAD has happened to Dolphin Browser recently. As in the last 24 hours.

Every time I try to use the browser, it redirects me to the Play Store to install something called Dolphin YeeCloud Translate.

I do not want this app.
I do not need this app.
I refuse to install this app.
And I don't appreciate Dolphin's insistence that I install it to continue browsing.

I've emailed the Developer about this. If I don't hear anything back in a timely manner, I will have no choice but to uninstall the app. It's a shame, too: Dolphin is smooth, fast, and efficient. But I will not be coerced into installing a bunch of crapware.

Check the permission, the 3rd from last is enough to ditch the app (modify system settings).
However, since you're on Marshmallow, you might be able to deny the permissions that seem a bit too much, perhaps doing so will stop the B.S. w/o breaking the app.

The permissions cannot be altered, even in Marshmallow. So it looks like I'll be uninstalling it. It's a shame, too: I love Dolphin. What else do you recommend?

I just use Chrome & HTC Internet.
Typically just Chrome, but,if I experience weirdness/functionality/etc... on a particular site,HTC Internet is a fine browser.

Granted, both lack the bells & whistles of Dolphin or Firefox, but,my needs are simple.
The Samsung Browser ain't too bad either (Ad Blocker extension is available, nice touch)............

One thing that Dolphin and Samsung browser have in common.....download directly to external storage. This may not be a problem for MM with the adoptable storage, but it's huge for us Lollipoppers. Also not bad for a stock app. I made a commitment with my S4 to not double up and at least give the stock options a try. Been pleasantly surprised a couple times.

Dolphin responded to me with this:

So Sorry! I understand your concern. This issue has been resolved. Please long press Dolphin Translate icon in the right side bar to remove it. If that still fails, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the browser from the Play Store to complete the fix. I am truly sorry for the inconvenience. Please Give Me One More Chance.

Since I didn't install Dolphin Translate, there was nothing to remove. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it as instructed. They're taking a beating in the reviews on Google Play over this. Time will tell if the issue has been resolved: if it happens again, I'll uninstall it for good and try the Samsung Browser (even though I don't use a Samsung phone).

I got one of those popups, too. I happen to use Startpage, not Google or Chrome search, checking the roster of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the Vulcan and I was very surprised. I hadn't seen any ads until then. It was not easy to close.

It will be deleted.

I don't like Opera, nor do I like Mozilla. Pale Moon is out, browser OK but there's too much stuff involved. The only thing missing is about:config. I use Pale Moon on the computer, and if I want a chrome type browser SRW Iron.
I also won't use Google.

I'm looking at Lightning.

How's Boat browser these days? I bought it a couple of years ago.

Boat Browser used to be a very light browser but it has gotten as suspicious as Dolphin is now. I don't use it anymore.

Off Topic: Pirates on a 6 game winning streak! Raise it.

I'm a SF Giants fan. The Vulcan is hoisting the Jolly Roger.

I managed to get the search engine switched to Duck in Ghostery, so I have 2 browsers.
Slimbrowser is never mentioned. It does all right on the PC. It is fairly fast. They have an Android app out. Anyone here used it on Android?

I wouldn't worry too much about "modifying or delete USB storage" permissions. Chrome (and most other browsers) also has this same permission. It's pretty standard.

I've never had Dolphin "hijacked" but I did install it some time ago and then uninstalled it. I didn't like the way it performed. I hope you find a solution. Have you tried clearing the cache for the app - or, as a last resort, clearing the data?

I followed the advice from mikedt and stopped using anything other than Chrome.

(I do have the others installed and on a test device and they are only used to test website changes for compatibility.)

... Thom

Funnily enough I don't have Chrome installed (I don't care what Google thinks the default should be). Ghostery, Firefox and NB Pro are what I use these days.

Anything that does not move when I hit the back button ----

This ad or whatever it was (full page to boot) went to Play Store. I hit back, it flickered, and wouldn't budge. Tried 2 more times and closed Dolphin. It reminded me of some of the shills who post apps on the forum. Won't take NO for an answer.

Since I use Adblockers and had all privacy on, whatever they were collecting got dumped when I closed Dolphin. I have no bookmarks, so the only reference they had was MLB, Accuweather's jet stream and Startpage.

I think I had forbidden all permissions except wifi and network data to Dolphin anyway. No anything else.

I don't have Chrome, either.

I've used Dolphin forever, but this just killed it. Uninstalled. Trying Pale Moon now, toss up between Chrome and Pale Moon.

I have a similar problem with my pc and amd catalyst center... I installed their update and WHAM I got hit with a CRAP load of garbage and I am talking about AMD here not some unpopular garbage that makes me want to get rid of it... I had a program that installed because of catalyst center by amd / ati and it was recording dota 2 games and taking about like 10gb of space on my pc just through ****ing recordings!!!

I am so angry I want to email amd and tell them how much they suck!

I don't blame you dude... I sometimes wish these companies would have more integrity.

I got this reply from Dolphin:

Hi,
Thank you very much for your feedback and sorry for the unpleasant experience.
We have tried to stop showing YeeCloud Translate at the right sidebar. . You may restart Dolphin and see if it work fine.
If not, you can long press it to remove the add-on if it is still there after rebooting the browser.
We will remove it in our next version and it will be released as soon as possible.
We do apologize for the inconvenience again.
Thanks & regards,
Dolphin Support Team

Too little too late, as far as I'm concerned. It should never have been there in the first place. Back to Chrome and Dolphin has been uninstalled.

Why did they have it in there anyway? Was it meant for certain countries only and someone coded it wrong? Trial run in the US to see what the market would bear?

I've seen ads in apps - some are the free ones you can download to try before buying. Nothing was THAT intrusive.

This happens on the PC. Doesn't seem to matter which search engine. Something seems to be coded into a site so you can't use back, click on the back arrow and select where to go back to, and it isn't a separate window you can shut, either. Which is why I have everything set to dump when browser is closed.

Just FYI... Dolphin also installs a file called Tunny... it's in cache or miscellaneous or temp files, I don't remember... but if you uninstall Dolphin be sure to uninstall all files related to it including Tunny. This happened to me too when I uninstalled Dolphin. Also I got redirected to some website from Dolphin when I uninstalled it. It's just very strange...I don't trust it. If you're looking for a good fast browser for Android give Puffin a try.

Thanks. Would have tumbled to this sooner if Dolphin had their biology right. A dolphin is a mammal, Tunny (dialect for tuna) is a fish. I'd seen it snooping around, but hadn't made the connection.

I didn't get redirected anywhere on uninstalling either. Thanks

LOL Good observation! :mustachedroid:

Yeah, I didn't find the Tunny file until I started getting suspicious because I kept getting all this Dolphin-related crap AFTER I uninstalled it...so I went snooping through my device and yep, sure enough, there was good ol' Tunny hiding in my system. *smh*

I do know what a host file is. I'd still prefer NoScript and I'd like it on the fly. Not close and reopen the app to get it to work.

I could probably do without any web browser on the phone. Just wait and use the computer where I do have NO!
