Hi all

I am very new to smartphones but i am learning quickly. One answer to a question i have i can't find anywhere so i thought i would ask. If i accidentally leave on wifi, bluetooth or GPS does it use my internet usage even if i am not connecting to the internet or downloading apps or using a location or map app. So lets say i just sit my phone down and don't use it at all but have left on the gps, wifi or bluetooth does it use usage data??. I know it drains battery but i don't know what it does to usage.

Please help me understand that way i may not be so anal in checking everything is always turned off :D

if ur wifi is on, and u have auto updating apps, such as weather/news widgets, etc, push mail, whatsapp, those apps will sync in the background, and use wifi.. however, data usage is not much of an issue on wifi, so im gonna assume u mean does ur mobile data connection (3G) get used.. the answer is, if ur wifi is connected, ur 3G connection will not be used.. if there's no wifi in range, and ur 3G is on, ur 3G will be used for all the uses that i just mentioned..

GPS will only work if u use an app such as foursquare etc.. so u can leave it on, and it wont be used, nor will it drain battery. hope this answers ur question :)

I know wifi and bluetooth won't use your 3G data since they're completely separate and run without a sim card installed. GPS should be the same but it may interact with your google apps such as Latitude in the background. I'm pretty sure it's only doing something if the little GPS icon is showing, but I can't say for sure.

I don't think you should worry about it, because only the gps sounds like it might maybe use some data usage, and i think that if it does it is probably very little usage.
i usually check to see that i've close them, but more for the battery, and im not worried if gps wasn't turned off..

gps wont use data by itself. only a gps-related APP might use data, for example maps, when the map are has to be downloaded..u can safely leave ur GPS on, and have no worries of using data (or battery drainage) coz of it :)

EDIT: although yes, i realize AGPS uses ur mobile network to triangulate ur location, so although this would be kind negligible, i guess it does use a bit of data :D but the GPS itself does not

and to add on to my earlier answer, if data usage is an issue for u, when u dont want the data to be used, just turn it off.. (press n hold power, and turn it off) :)

Thanks Everyone

I manually update every app as i like to see what is new and improved so it sounds as though i have nothing to worry about. I have a 2gb data allowance and i usually only use 1 of those gigs anyway so i really shouldn't go over even with auto updates turned on.

Once again
Thanks
