have an odd problem with com.android.phone

i am a noob to the underbelly of modifying android, but i have looked through forums and online tutorials for 3 days and still have no answers, so i had to start a thread. i bought a phone online a few weeks ago and everything works fine on it, except one thing. while in a phone call, ill try to access the dial pad, (for voicemail and other automated menus) and i get the "unfortunetly, the process com.android.phone has stopped" message. the only option i have is to press ok, and the call ends. i have factory reset, tried freezing google sync, sim toolkit, other dialers, etc. i havent tried flashing a different rom, but from what i read, it would not fix the problem. everything else on the phone works, except that one function, and i need that function for my job.

im running out of options and need help. im running android 4.2.2, rooted. i have tried to see if there was a way to replace that one file by extracting it from a rom or something, but have yet to see it. i cant send the phone back nor take it to my carrier because im on straighttalk and i bought the phone online and its past my return date. any suggestions? (remember i am a noob to android, but not to linux systems seeing as i run ubuntu on all my computers)

thanks in advance

Which phone do you own?

If the issue still persists after a factory reset, it's not normally a good sign. However, you may be able to reflash the stock software to try and fix it.

the answer to what phone i have is not a good one.....a chinese clone....so i know the response is normally, "contact/find makers stock rom"....dont know if thats an option..i have sent them an email, but im not sure i will have much luck

Ah :(

Have you tried installing another dialer app from Play?

It's a long shot as I'm sure they just act as an overlay for the stock dialer/phone app, but it might be worth a go?

so if i flash a rom, could that potentially fix it?...could i potentially get a rom that could tweak the dialer enough that it may work?...maybe the rom thats on it (this version of 4.2.2 doesnt seem to be like the others ive seen so i suspect it might be a rom) is corrupted and a new rom may fix it... or is there a way to replace a certain file using different means? android is a little different beast than other linux systems ive worked with so im not sure if that is possible...

i cant believe that a person cant swipe and repartition the harddrive...that doesnt seem correct..all other linux systems can, why not android?...it only allows u to build upon the original version...i guess ill just have to wait for ubuntu phone os to get the bugs worked out

would a factory reset erase any rom that's on the phone?...as i said, im new to this, and android is weird....i havent read whether or not a factory reset takes away roms on a rooted phone

Nah the rom is in the system partition and a reset doesn't touch that. Your dialer is also in that partition but a reset is worth trying in case something is conflicting with it.
If you can't find the factory rom then a custom rom is the next step (if you can find one built for your device)
Aparently Ubuntu Touch is horrible btw lol ;)

i know ubuntu touch is horrible right now...but it hasnt been released yet...its still in development stage...i knew they were gonna have issues for a year or so...but maybe by the end of this year they could be up and running fairly well...we will see..

but i think i may have some good news about the phone..i might be entitled to a refund....crossing fingers
