would like to upgrade version android 2.2.2 on impulse phone purchased in 2011, can not get certain apps to work
 
If the carrier didn't push an update to the phone by now, they aren't going to. So you're going to have to find a ROM with a later version of Android for that phone and flash it.
 
Welcome to AF, as Rukbat said unless a over the air update is pushed you can't update. You could how ever instal a custom rom to get a newer OS.
