Welcome to Android Forums!

I can give you the general instructions, but without knowing which device you have, the screens could be different. And, depending on the carrier, some of the processes may be blocked.

Assuming your device is plain Android and unlocked and in a country where the market is available, then you need to unzip the file from "filename.zip" to "filenam.apk" and then put it on your SD card.

Next you'll need to go to menu>settings>applications and check the box next to unknown sources. This will allow non-market apps to install.

Finally you'll need a file manager like Astro or eStrongs. Using the file manager, find the .apk file that you placed on your sd card and click on it. You should be given the option to install it.

I unzipped this app for a tablet and there is all sorts of file! The download said install it like any other, but no apk! What now? Should I just change the file extention?

Welcome budman!
Thanks for joining! If there is no apk file, are you sure it is an app for your tablet? Be wary of downloading from sites other than the market.
What app was it supposed to be?
What tablet do you have?
