Having trouble getting the battery to charge

I've tried different cords with no success. Sometimes I plug it in and it says fully charged in 5 or 6 hours or whatever, and sometimes it says twice that or even more than a day. I've had it plugged in for almost 6 hours now and it's actually gone down to 4%. It's been off and on slow for a week or two. Is my battery going? Is it hard to change it? Is there a video showing how? I can't afford a new phone right now. I've had my phone for 2 yrs.

So for a few days the battery charged fine with a different charger. Now it's doing it again so I really think it's the battery and not the charger/cord. Last night it was at around 95% and said 4 hours to charge or some crazy number. I rebooted the phone and it said 6 minutes or something more reasonable. Does this behavior point to a dying battery? I'll look at the links for replacing it and see if I think I can manage it.

thanks everyone, for the help and links!

If the battery has been used for a while maybe it's the time to replace it. Aged batteries don't like deep discharge as they might be unable to recover.

I've had it for just over 2 yrs. Now that you mention it it has run completely out a couple of times recently. Maybe that was the catalyst. I ordered a new battery and installation tools so hopefully that will do the trick. If not I guess I better start saving for a new phone.

So right now it won't fully charge at all. It got to about 93% and said fully charged in 8 minutes and then switches to fully charged in 40 minutes. I turned it off and plugged it in for 10 minutes and it's down to 92%. So it LOST charge while charging. WTH.

I ordered a battery and right before it arrived, my phone started acting normally again. But it didn't last. Today it was plugged in for about 4 hours and went from 11% to 17% in that time. So I went ahead and replaced it. It wasn't too hard even though the took kit I got is pretty much junk. I managed though so I'm hoping it helps.

I hope your new battery works well, Gale65. Although my two-and-a-bit-year-old Nexus 5 is OK so far, I may at some stage need to replace the battery; nothing lasts for ever.
May I ask where you got your replacement battery? (I see you're in 'the land of the free', whereas I'm in 'the old country' so I may not find it easy to use your supplier anyway.)

I got it from ebay but the seller is eforcity and I think they sell on amazon as well. They may have their own website too. It sounds familiar anyway.

New battery is doing the same thing. I plugged it in a few hours ago because we're going somewhere tonight. It was around 75%. Now it's at 45% after being plugged in all that time. Not sure what else to try now.

Check your charger and your charging cable. I've had a similar problem several times, usually fixed by using a new charging cable and once by replacing the charger itself.

I've tried 3 different charging cables and chargers and tried several different outlets. One charger/cable is brand new and the others aren't very old. One is a quick charge type that is charger and cable in one.

I wonder if it's the port thing that the cable plugs into. I don't have a wireless charger to try though and I'm not sure i want to buy one for this.

You might be right. Is there anywhere you can try a wireless charger, perhaps at a store? If you explain that you'll buy the wireless charger if it works, they might let you try it out in the store. The only problem is that a wireless charger is much slower than a wired one, so some patience will be needed.

Or you could just take the risk and buy one. The price on eBay is less than $3.

It's worse than ever today. I woke up with it at 4% even though it had been plugged in all night. I switched to another charger and 2 hours later it was up to a whopping 6% with 23 hours to full. Kept fiddling with it and now about 8 hours later it's up to 60% and says 17 hours to full. I ordered a wireless charger. I paid more than $3 but I went ahead and used amazon prime's 1 day shipping so I will get it on Monday. If that doesn't work I guess I need to decide which new phone to buy. :(

eta: once I finally get it fully charged, it seems to discharge at a normal rate. I guess I should be thankful for the little things.

We know it's hardware, it's not the battery, and it's something in the phone itself, but not specifically what.

If the wireless charger works, it'll be the port, otherwise it's whatever controls the charging.

Tell us how the wireless charger works for you.

Something I've noticed. If it's below 70-75% or so, it has trouble charging. I plugged it in at around 68% and 2 hours later it was at 66%. Rebooted and took the cord in and out and it seemed to start charging. But once it's above that sweet spot of 70-75% it seems to charge fine.

My charger is due to arrive today so I'll report back about how that works. I'm getting the feeling I'll be springing for a new phone though. I just can't decide which one. I'll look for recent threads asking what people think of the new google phones vs the samsung galaxy line.

wireless charging not working at all. I took the phone out of the case, squeezed in lots of places (in case of contacts not making contact-I read this somewhere), repositioned the phone several ways, nothing. The charging cable and plug in thing that came with the wireless charger will charge the phone so I know they are fine. I'm getting frustrated with this whole thing.

I can't see any mention of it (unless I've missed something), but I've heard that the built-in battery monitor in the Nexus is notoriously unreliable. I believe there are third-party ones that are more accurate and more reliable, though I'm not sure which ones. Have you tried another battery monitoring app?

I have not. I'll look for those. I got the wireless charging to work. I cracked open the case, lifted up the qi contacts, and put some electrical tape underneath to push them up a bit. Now they are making contact and it's wireless charging. I'll look for the app.
