Root Having trouble rooting S5. Stuck on "Downloading. Do not turn off target!"

Hey all,

I have a G900F on official Samsung firmware. I'm wanting to root it to CM13, but I'm having difficulty. Whenever I restart my phone and attempt to load the firmware I get this error: "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!" It stays on that screen and doesn't change.

Does anyone have suggestions on what I can do?

I'll give that a shot. Feel free to move this thread where you think is appropriate.
Well, reading through the link provided by @ironass, :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696537

it appears that it may/will work on your version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696537&page=136

Now, like I said, I'm no expert and just barely skimmed through that entire thread :p , but I would be willing to bet it would work.

Tell ya what, let me make a few mouseclicks and move this thread for ya.
Then I'll rattle @ironass 's cage to see if he can chime in :)

Galaxy S5 international model, G900F, on stock Samsung firmware for Lollipop, Android 5.0, requires this CF-Auto-Root kernel...

https://download.chainfire.eu/727/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-klte-kltedx-smg900f.zip

Flash it using Odin3 v3.11.1.

Ensure that re-partition is NOT checked in Odin when you flash. If, after a successful flash, the phone bootloops, wipe the cache partition as per #1.3 of S5 Update Problems - Dummies Guide

Night all... sweet dreams. ;)

BL or AP? I used BL without reading up on it first. I'm stuck in the recovery boot loop as you described.

So far, I'm not able to boot into anything. It's hung up on one page. The phone just says "RECOVERY BOOTING...." Recovery is not seandroid enforcing. Set Warranty Bit :recovery.

I'm attempting to re-downloading the OS to the phone using Odin.

BL = bootloader. The kernel needs to be flashed in AP:

Download the stock Samsung firmware for your model of phone, CSC and Product Code and flash that and then re-root.

I was able to completely restore it back to factory using Kies. After that, I used Odin to install (using AP) the auto-root file you linked me. However, I'm still getting stuck on the "recovery booting...." screen. I can't get to the menu to allow me to wipe the cache.

Power + home + volume up does not do anything.

Power + home + volume down puts the phone into download mode.

I can't bring up that menu. The phone is stuck as soon as I boot up. It says " "RECOVERY BOOTING...." Recovery is not seandroid enforcing. Set Warranty Bit :recovery."

The phone won't even boot normally. I can ONLY go into download mode.

I was able to open the "Wipe Cache" option on the STOCK firmware. As soon as I loaded the rom, it wouldn't let me open that menu using volume up + power + home button.

Sounds as though your bootloader flashing mistake has caused an issue. Download and reflash the stock Samsung firmware for your model of Galaxy S5, CSC and Product code, via Odin by following the instructions and video contained in the links of #1.11 of 42 Galaxy S5 models - Dummies Guide

What exactly does this part mean? "CSC and Product code"? Does Kies take care of that?

I'm currently back on stock firmware and it's functioning fine.

If you are now back on stock firmware via Kies, then all well and good. CSC and Product codes are used to find the exact firmware out of the 200+ for your model, as described in #1.8 of the aforementioned link. You can now go ahead and root your phone, using the kernel for Android 5.0, that you say you are on... unless you have upgraded to Marshmallow, Android 6.0.1 via Kies. The CF-Auto-Root kernel is flashed in AP: of Odin.

I'm still on 5.0, I just checked. I'm a little apprehensive only because I tried going back to the stock firmware and then re-rooting. I didn't have luck doing that the 2nd time. This was about 30 minutes ago.

Rooting the Galaxy S5 international model, G900F, is a relatively simple and straightforward process if the instructions are followed correctly. Just to be on the safe side, could you post your phone's, "Version", and Product code details, as per #1.8 of the Dummies Guide, mentioned above.

Here's what I did after the 2nd restore. I used Odin and attached the file you linked me to the AP file up-loader spot. I successfully applied it to my phone in Download Mode. When I restarted my phone, it never goes to the phones desktop and gets hung up on the "recovery mode" (top right corner) screen. That's basically where I get stuck. Then, I have to use Kies to bring it back to factory firmware in order to just use the phone again.

I'm not seeing it under about device. Am I looking in the wrong place ?
Think you may have to use this app:
*** If code *#1234# has been disabled on your firmware, you can download and install, free from the Play Store,Phone Info and it will give you, under FIRMWARE... PDA, Baseband, CSC, versions. This app also has the advantage of showing your phone's PRODUCT CODE which can be useful if there is more than one firmware for your CSC code.

There you go. The app worked.

Your Product code is for the Hong Kong firmware, TGY. Your, "Version", details are for the PF2 firmware release from 3 days ago, for Android 5.0 and not, as expected, Marshmallow.

Try using the following CF-Auto-Root kernel and see if you have better luck...

If that does not work, download and flash the stock firmware for Hong Kong via Odin without relying on Kies this time and use the earlier kernel I linked you to to try rooting.
