1.4 allows us to install non-sense roms like CM9, while 1.57 only allows sense based roms.

lol pretty much hboot 1.57 sucks and 1.40 is a beast..with 1.40 you can flash anything aosp ..sense..gingerbread..just not roms based on the new sprint firmware..which may be an issue in the future..but who knows
