All you would need to use an auxiliary cable is an available input on the back of your receiver. Just simply plug into your headphone jack on one end and put the RCA plugs in the available input.
But don't let me stand in the way of a receiver upgrade...
I have a receiver with HDMI inputs and also pass-through. I could try it out on my system and report back any noticeable differences in audio quality, since HDMI is digital and auxiliary would be analog. Let me know and I'd be happy to try.
