Help HDMI to Component, MHL problem?

I bought my Father in Law a little android TV box so he could watch Netflix, and browse the internet on his TV. I took it round to install, and discovered his TV only has Component. I picked up a HDMI to component converter, but it’s doesn't work with the TV box. I brought the converter home to test and discovered it works great on my daughters Hudl2 when connected via the micro HDMI, but it won’t work when connected to my phone via MHL.

I figure this must have something to do with MHL and the Android box is pumping out the same signal as my phone. Can anyone confirm this and does anyone know of a converter. I’m happy to shell out for another converter, a new TV is pushing it :)
 
Hello and welcome to the forums. May I ask what kind of TV is this and what picture format are you using most of the boxes start with 720i
 
It's Sharp LC-37AD1E. I didn't check the resolution, I'm pretty sure it's auto so it should pick it up from the source
