Help headphone jack

So I'm new to this whole smart phone thing. I got my phone last night in light of my env2 dying on me all the sudden. I just plugged in earbuds into the 3.5mm (or whatever it is) jack at the top of the phone & the sound still comes out of the phone speaker..? What do i need to do to hear the sound in the earbuds? I'd think it'd happen right when u plug it in.

I just put mine on a you tube video and plugged in some earphones and it went straight to the earphones...Two possibilities:

1) try a different set of earphones and make sure to plug in completely
2) reboot and try again

May be a bad unit... Im on my second one but its doing great now...
