Help Headphones - static/interference at low volume

I hear static/interference over the headphones when I do things on the Nexus 7 while listening to audio (music/movie/whatever) at low volume. For instance, it's noticeable when interacting with the screen (tapping, dragging) and loading apps. It's only an issue in a quiet environment, but is still annoying.

Perhaps it's poor shielding?

Have others experienced this with their Nexus 7?

I've only used headphones when playing Osmos, and I haven't noticed any interference while I'm tapping around attempting not to get eaten.

make sure the contacts are clean in the jack but I tried doing the usual things while playing music at a low volume level and it was crystal clear with the earphones I tried, no static at all.

Exactly the same here. Any screen interaction leads to a pop followed by 2-3 seconds of static hiss, before it quietens down.

I tried several sets of quality headphones, as well as updating to 4.1.2 and it's still there.

Highly annoying as I want to use this with headphones while travelling.

My friends does not do this so I am returning mine today and will have to wipe mine and re setup the new one. Annoying!

As a child of the 60's there's only 2 volume settings. LOUD, and <-ears bleeding->

I've only noticed this on the charger upwards of 85%
I think it has to do with how the N7 slows charging when almost full to preserve the battery. So it gets some extra power from the charger, which is partly dissipated through the motherboard and so the headphone jack.
Don't know if that's benign or nefarious. In any case it won't electrocute you or fry your tablet.
