Help Heartbroken... [Use Xperia Z Without Network?]

This might well sound crazy and/or stupid, but...
I had saved up to get myself the Sony Xperia Z after seeing the incredible and irresistible features it has. I finally was able to buy the purple version, which I was extremely overly excited for, because it was the most expensive thing I had actually purchased in one go. I had even sold several things I owned and was very sad to let go, just so I could afford the $600 price tag! Well, the seller was actually kind enough to inform me that I wouldn't be able to use the phone on the sh*tty Verizon Network I am now soul-bound to for 2 years (before purchasing the phone, and without the a**-hats at the Verizon store bothering to stop my raves on the Xperia to tell me it was not compatible!) I was refunded, but have since been wondering: Isn't it possible to just use the phone for some things like pre-loaded videos and music, and connecting to home wi-fi? There has to be some way to do this. I had a Samsung Proclaim I could still use quite a lot when I ran out of time on the card. PLEASE, somebody save my dreams for this phone, and tell me it is still usable for some things! I am more than willing to buy it for that reason, and wait until I am freed of Verizon's evil grasp so I can use the calling and texting services.

Yup, that is perfectly possible. It will complain about not finding a SIM card at startup but just "OK" past the pop-up and you can then join an available wireless network.

Sony's media software (Albums, Movies, Walkman etc) is all fully DNLA-compliant so my entire CD collection, ripped to high-bitrate MP3, is instantly available in the Walkman app for example.
