Help heat question

Do you guys have black oryou sure you sure youre on 4g and not 3g white ones? also do you have the xt910 or xt912 (can be found on back of phone)

Yes 4g, and xt912. Its never gottin hot, warm or other. And there both black.

I switched to 3g in hopes of switching back to 4glte after heat issues are fixed, but even in 3g mode after browsing the net for sometime my phone still heats up. Not as hot as in 4glte and the center of the screen, not the top. Is this normal or should i swap for a refurbished?

mine got hot the first few days of hammering it wit use, but since the 173 update it BARELY gets warm at any given time

Yep,
Mine got hot during 4G twice today. Never really noticed it before, because I don't live or work in 4G land. I work in a different office once a week and am picking 4G today. I have the 173 update.

This may be a dumb question, but how do I turn off 4G, and keep 3G going?

To make the toggle easier, download and install the app "4G Toggle". Once installed, click on the apps icon which takes you directly to Mobile Network settings on your phone. There, change your Network Mode to "CDMA only" which is indicative of 3G and forces the phone to use just 3G. For either or 3G/4G you select CDMA/LTE. LTE is indicative of 4G.

you can also go into wireless & networks, go to mobile networks, then go into network mode and change it.

my phone gets hot in 3g as well after browsing the internet for about 10-20 minutes, but not as hot as in 4g lte mode. it also gets hot more towards the center of the screen vs the top of the screen in 3g mode.

Hot is relative; my phone will reach 102 degrees if (for example) I run tunit (internet radio) for 20 minutes. 102 definitely feel warmer than the normal temp but not sure if you would qualify it as 'hot'.

My 4G USB modem gets hot when I use it...its gets the hottest (really hot) when its straining for connection (weak signal...especially on 1xrtt)

I expect the phones will have the same issue since electricity generates heat through resistance...and the more data you try to push through, the more resistance...and the more heat.

Many folks seem to think its the battery that generates the heat...but my USB modem doesn't have a battery...so, it must just be the inner workings of the devices doing their thing....

Would you rather have heat...or a cooling fan in your phone? While effective...the cooling fan would be noisy (bad thing for a phone) and would likely be a huge drain on the battery.

Not trying to be a smart a## or a know it all (cause I don't)...just putting it out there...the heat is there to stay...with devices this powerful, there is no way around it short of cooling fans, water cooling systems, or dry ice, LOL....and there are drawbacks to all of those too...fans are loud, water leaks, and dry ice causes condensation...all bad things for a phone.

So...until superconductors become standard equipment on phones (and PC's) we have heat. :D

Thats this ole hillbilly's best guess anyway...

EDITED TO ADD: Being new to smart phones...I've been reading a lot here and elsewhere...and from what I'm seeing in everything I've read about heat issues...I'm thinking we have just about gone as far as we can go with these devices until somebody figures out a way to keep them cool.

The point of my post above, though it might have been a bit subtle, is that unless the OP can qualify 'hot' the answers are fairly useless. I.e, the phone will definitely undergo a rise in temp. over and extended period of usage. However, one person might claim it is hot at 99 degrees; while another might claim it is cool at 110 degrees.

The phone is definitely warmer but is it 'hot' ?

So if the OP can qualify hot in some fashion such that others can systematically compare with their phone the answers are going to be at best not very useful.

[Not that it is relevant but yes my cable modem; usb dognles and even my cf cards are definitely at a higher temp while being actively utilized under load for a period of time than when sitting idle or unused.]

imo my phone gets pretty darn hot. it doesnt go into overheat mode, but its warm/hot enough to hurt my cheek if i put my phone up to my cheek

Mine got pretty hot yesterday, but I've only had it since yesterday. I just wrote it off as it doing what the Mac Book Pro does... there's no room in it for a heat sink so it just uses the case as a heat sink.

I found that when the media service was running, the phone got really hot. The store said it was defective, but I found if I turned off the media service, it stopped heating up. I used a battery monitor to kill the service.

I found it by installing the Battery Widget. Then when open, go to the Battery option at the top. If media is running it will show there. Otherwise, you'll see a list such as Display, Android OS, Phone idle, etc. Things that are draining the battery.

When Media is running, your phone will get warm. Does it on my Droid 3 too.
