hello all...how do we toggle satellite / reg map view in Google maps?

Assuming you are on the latest version, swipe from the left hand side of screen or tap the on-screen menu button at the bottom left to open the menu. Satellite is the fourth option down - toggle as required. The menu will close after toggling. To manually close the menu swipe back to the left or tap the screen on the right hand side.

There's no need to feel ashamed. It took me a minute to figure out you have to slide up from the bottom to view directions when they first changed it. Google has been making a lot of these design changes in their apps the last year or so; Like the menu's sliding from the left. It's actually a cleaner user experience if you know how it works. But, they've done a poor job teaching users the new UI elements, which makes the apps confusing at first.
