Hello - got a new phone and need info

I have a samsung intercept and want to sync it with my computer's outlook data. Haven't had a smart phone before, but surely "there's an app for that!"

Sync locally with an Outlook client? Or sync with MS Exchange?
 
I have been using a palm phone and I connect it to the usb on my computer and it would do it's magic. I'm suspecting this phone doesn't communicate with my pc using the usb port. all that happens when I plug it in is charging and an unrecognized device without a driver. I thinking I should have reseached more before I bought this phone. I'm into fast and easy and have already spent way too much time trying to make this work.
