I am and IT professional of 25 years and one of those nerds that believe everything apple and micros**t are devilish concoctions straight from the depths of hades. I didn't really chose Android but very recently purchased an Archos 43. Unfortunately I found this forum because I'm having a problem getting the device to build the media library from the 4000 mp3 and cover art files I loaded into its memory.

I see that another user posted a question over a month ago describing the exact same problem I am having but hasn't received a single reply. I'm now concerned that the Android community is too small/immature to make it a viable choice. :(

Welcome to the Android Forums!

Unfortunately the Archos 43 is not one of the more mainstream tablets. As such it has a fairly small user base. Android, as an OS, is designed to work on a multitude of platforms. The software manufacturer, Google, provides a baseline OS image to specific hardware developers who modify it to work properly on their hardware platform. As such it is physically not possible for it to work exactly the same way on each and every platform.

Like you I've been in IT for a long time, in my case my first IT-related job was well over 30 years ago. What I've learned in all this time is that no OS can do everything for everyone. Android can do a lot but, in all honesty, it's primary function is that of a smartphone (and now tablet) OS and not a media player. Give Android some time... it'll grow on you! :D

Thanx for the reply. Actually the user who posted the question (with no reply in over a month) was using a smart phone but described the exact same problem I'm having on my Archos 43. My concern stems from the fact that he hasn't received a single reply. As an IT professional for over 30 years, I'm sure you are well acquainted with the fact sometimes open systems catch on (e.g. Linux) and sometimes they don't (e.g. CORBA)

I really hope Android catches on and buries iPod/iPhone and windows mobile but the above example has me worried. I was a rockbox user at one time. I liked rockbox okay but it was a bit too "techie" and cryptic for my taste. When it comes to certain devices, like my portable MM device or blackberry, I don't want to make it a hobby - I just want to use it.

For the record, the kernel of Android is Linux...

One of the on-going challenges we have here is that some threads garner hundreds of responses while others get none. In my opinion, for what little that is worth, I'd be more concerned if there were 20 threads about the problem, each without a response.

So what exactly is the issue that you are experiencing? Have you tried going to the Android Market and trying alternate media apps? There are some pretty decent ones in the market...
