Hello.
It is possible to root the HTC Desire from the U.S. Cellular stock Android 2.2 (Froyo). I have done so thank to some of the links found through the forums. I previously rooted an Android 2.1 HTC Desire but had to send it in due to a hardware malfunction (wouldn't charge). I did restore it to the stock install before sending it in (could switch back to s-on) and it was swapped out with no questions asked.
The new warranty replacement one came with Android 2.2 (Froyo) installed on it. I was able to root it. I installed the CyanogenMod 7 ROM running Android 2.3 (GingerBread) on it and it works great.
