Im new to this site, just got my first Android, it's a used EVO 4G, I want to root it but i don't know if i should is there anything specific that i should know before i do it. I see the bold warning on the Bootloader sight that says not to unlock it. What should i know before i do it besides the fact that it's not covered by warranty and that it can cause "may cause unexpected side effects."

Hello and welcome to AF. :)

Rooting or aquiring root access is basically hacking your phone and taking a step up from average user to administrative privilege of your phone. You can do a lot more with a rooted android than you could with a regular one. You can now change/remove the stock OS of your phone and install a new custom OS (or ROM) on your phone and give it more features and a whole new look, feel and flavor. There is a lot more things you can do, this being an example of what you can do, but there are "Side affects"
You run the risk of bricking (breaking) your phone which the term "bricking" comes from when you change to software or mess the root process up to the point where your phone no longer functions and assumes the functionality of a brick. There is also bootloops where your phone will constantly shut-off and turn itself back on. It's possible to recover from a soft brick, but not a hard brick. If you want to root, than please make sure to do your homework and study it before attempt. I, nor the other members here would want to have you brick your phone, so please give it thought before attempting it. :)
You also get full control of your device too.
