Not 100% sure since I don't use aim anymore but pretty sure you just hit menu and there's an option that says "add friend"
You might wanna check out imo.im it's a VERY stable app and not a huge battery drain.

Everything the aim app offers and then some. Also, all messages send. I noticed on aim some messages wouldn't send or be received. Never had a problem with this app.
