Help help - cannot access contacts

Hello

For some reason I no longer can access my contacts when I do a search.
I have to get other people's numbers, but when I dial the number on my phone, the phone has a record of it cos the contacts come up.
Hope that makes sense.

If someone rings me their name comes up on my phone, but when I search contacts it doesn't.

Please can anyone tell me why I cannot access my contacts when I do a search, yet when I ring their numbers, their name and number shows up on my call log.
