Help! Cannot sync at all even manually!

Hi, I first started getting this issue yesterday on my HTC Desire HD and my sync is totally broken. Ever since I bought the phone (some 18 months ago) I have never activated auto-sync and always sync'd manually as the data exchange seems to be quite large, but I have kept background data turned on as otherwise some apps don't work at all. I always sync manually (e.g. "Refresh" icon in gmail, or sync menu in the settings). Now, I noticed it had stopped working when the "Refresh" icon in gmail started not retrieving mails that I had in my inbox through the gmail web application.

When I press that Refresh, or go into Accounts & Sync and press Sync Now on any service, or even when I press Sync All, it doesn't do anything - also the sync icon doesn't appear in the taskbar and the spinning icon doesn't appear in Accounts & Sync. Like I said, this is true for any service, not just google services but also facebook, htc etc.

My data connection is fine and I can still access the internet through the browser or any application (except Sync), and even search for mails within the gmail app! Also, I have more than 100MB free space in my internal memory.

I have tried turning Auto-Sync on and it doesn't make a difference. I have also tried clearing the data for Gmail but that just made it worse because now when I open Gmail it just says "Waiting for sync" and "Your email will appear shortly." but nothing ever appears, even when I tap refresh.

Please someone help!!
 
Is this a problem only with Gmail?

edit: My bad...Didn't see you did try with other services as well...

Did you try to restart the phone? Sometimes that helps
 
Yes, I restarted the phone a couple of times, tried restarting it both with auto-sync turned on and with it turned off, didn't make any difference...
 
hmmm In the manage accounts section (Accounts & Sync settings), do you have any errors?
Have you considered deleting the account and adding it again?
 
I haven't tried deleting the account and adding it again, but I doubt that would make a difference as none of my other syncs are working either. (It's not just this one.)

This account is my main Google Account which I sign into the phone with, it is linked to my Google Play apps, and also Gmail/Drive/Contacts etc. Deleting it would be only partially worse than doing a factory reset!!

As I mentioned, I don't think it will help as it doesn't seem to be a problem with just that account, but with the entire sync mechanism. Also, there are no sync errors in Manage Accounts that I can see.
 
This brings up another problem, if I make changes to my Google Contacts now, is there any way to ever sync them to my Google Account again? e.g. via a PC, is there some way to do this without the sync itself actually working. Because otherwise if I take some drastic measures sometime in the future (e.g. factory reset, or buying a new phone) then I will lose all my Contacts data (both additions and modifications) up til that point...
 
Hmm, I realised I'd recently (i.e. yesterday) installed an update to the app "Viber". When I uninstalled Viber, the Sync is now working again. How strange??

This have happened once to me on my HTC Desire Z phone. Unlike yours I was having issues with Google account, it was not getting sync neither automatically nor manually, I tried clearing cache memory of my Google apps removed my Google account once, restarted my device and then added my G-account. The issue was solved, make a try.
