Help, first time rooting S2, am very confused.

Hello to all.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 from Bell, Canada.
Its running stock 4.0.3

I want to install a fresh OS and root it. I don't care about saving what is on the phone right now.
I am battery life issues, and I'm looking for a ROM that is not fancy (I'm fine with the stock UI) and with good battery life
and is easy to install.

I have read about this and am very confused. What is the difference between the Kernal, Rom, Firmware ?
Should I root it now ? or after installing the ROM ?
Or install a clean stock OS first ?

If anyone could point me to the right direction I would be very grateful.
Thanks,
HP

There is an "all things root" section for this sort of stuff, and follow the "rooting for dummies guide" by our friendly neighbourhood ironass. This will tell you everything you need to know.
(along with a load of other crud that you don't! :D )

Hello and welcome to Android Forums HoloPed! :)

May I suggest that you carefully and thoroughly read...

which should answer a lot of your questions.

EDIT Blast! ninja'd by an old boy like Hawker. :stickyman:

Welcome to the forum HoloPed and thanks for joining.

Just follow the guide ironass had given you and you'll be in capable hands.

I'll move this to the all things root forum:)

But but but...
My model is i9100M
Will this guide work ?

And my Kernal is 3.0.15-i9100MUGLD3
I can't find anything close to that in the kernal downloads.

Right, you have the, "M", variant, Bell Canada, on ICS.

In that case you can use the LP8, CF-Root kernel for that as they haven't got an ICS one just for the, "M, variant.

The only difference between the GT-i9100 and your GT-i9100M, is the letter, "M" that designates that it's a Bell, phone.
