Help For High Annual Cost of Cell Phones

My wife has been complaining that we spend too much money each year on cell phones, and I think I finally know why. I believe I have been using an improper method when replacing my screen protector, which might be leading to premature phone replacement.

My method is a bit unorthodox, and I DO NOT recommend that anyone else do it this way, as I will not be responsible for any damage done to your phone.

I take a really small drill bit attached to my power drill and drill through the exact center of my phones screen protector, stopping just before I hit the glass. I am very careful to only go through the plastic of the screen protector. I repeat this process with one more hole approximately 1/4 inch away from the first hole.

I then take a barbed fish hook, and place the sharp tip in the hole I created with the drill bit, following the curve of the hook, forcing the barbed tip through the second hole I made. Once the fish hook is completely through both holes, I pull up slowly, creating a "circus tent" like effect with the old screen protector, until it is completely off the phone.

Does anyone else out there use a similar technique?

Honestly, that sounds dangerous on so many levels.

If you're not worried about a fish hook hitting the center of the glass under the screen, why not just get a little pry point started at the edge or corner - even with a razor/xacto blade if needed.

What issue are you solving?

My issue is that I am wrecking too many phones with my method of removing my screen protector.

You gave me the answer I need, thanks.

I use an air die-grinder to carefully get most all layers of the screen protector plastic away leaving a sub-millimeter layer of plastic and adhesive, then I clean up the adhesive residue with a mixture of methyl-ethyl-ketone and diesel fuel.

If you try this I recommend lowering your normal regulator pressure since you're working with expensive fragile stuff. I normally regulate at 90-100 psi, I figure about 87 psi is good for this type of work.

At the end I go completely unregulated and put my blow gun on to blow away / dry-off the mek and diesel. 150psi gets it gone pretty quick. have to pay special attn around the speaker and mic to make sure you get it all, I blast those areas a lot longer.

Dropping it in the 10% HCl bath at work seems to take the screen protector right off, but do you think nitric would be better?

(OK, don't want to spoil the fun, but I've been burned before by people taking these things seriously, with disastrous consequences. Anyway, THIS IS A JOKE.)

Dude, your my hero! I actually removed my very last step of Muriatic acid for cleaning the screen. I am so glad someone is even more creative than me.
Have a great day!

My screen protectors just peel right off with no residue...what the heck kind of screen protectors are you guys using? Mine peel off easy when I want them to, and stay on as long as I don't pry up the edge! I am very puzzled....

The thread is a joke, I think. Your reply and EarlyMon's reply are likely the best to solve the OP's "problem"

Why remove it?

I just keep putting the new ones on top of the old ones.

It somewhat affects the touch feature of the phone, but I mostly only carry it for the looks anyway. Nobody ever calls or texts me and I can look outside to check the weather.

I save $80/month by not having a data plan too!

I have had a really long week at work. I read the op and for a split sec was like "man that's extreme". Ok maybe longer than a split sec. :-\

Same here, i was wondering why anyone would actually do that. It sounded extremely serious when I was reading it.

I use this handy devise, works great for removing these pesky screen protectors. anyone else?
