I am going to buy a s3 from my uncle but it has a bad esn on sprint. My question is can i root and flash it to boost or metro pcs and have it activated

It's really best to call or visit the provider (Sprint in this case) and tell them you know it's a bad ESN but want to know why it's bad (unless your uncle can tell you, but I'd contact the provider anyway as there may have been a misunderstanding between them and your uncle). Sometimes it's quite innocent on the user's part, but sometimes it's a stolen device, etc.

Next step is to give that information to the new provider (Metro/Boost) and ask them if the device is eligible for activation on their network.
 
Ok called boost and metro both said no they don't support the s3 well boost said that anf metro said they dont take flashed phones anymore so now what?
 
Not sure what's the price though, with S4 out, hope that S3 will be cheaper now.

If you can wait, then you may compare the price next month and then decide where to buy from.
