HELP... GT-S5830i software update problems...

lcrjames

Newbie
Hi there,

I have tried searching but no joy. I have a GT-S5830i which I have rooted but I am still on the stock rom/gingerbread 2.3.6

Today my phone said an update is available, so I connected to WiFi and downloaded the 30.14mb update. My phone then rebooted itself and then when the start up screen came on saying samsung galace ace gt-s580i as normal, at the bottom it said installing update but when it gets to about 25% the screen then goes blank for a second and then starts up as normal. It then says update failed please try updating via samsung kies!

Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what to do to fix it?

Annoyingly I can now see my internal memory has gone up by 30mb too!

If I cant get this software update to work then I would like to delete this 30mb update from my phone! I did have a look with my ES File Explorer App but no joy. Does anyone know where are the updates are saved to?

Hopefully someone can tell me how to get this update to work though?!

Thanks,

James.

Ok so after searching more it seems I have found out that you cannot do a software update OTA once you are rooted, D'oh!!

So I now want to know how do I get rid of the 30mb I downloaded from my internal storage?! Can I simply delete it from the appropriate file, or is it not as simple as that?

Otherwise I am thinking of doing a factory reset, yes a pain in the bum, but will that get rid of the 30mb update download? Or should I do a factory reset and then unroot my phone, and then try and update OTA again? and then root my phone once more? Would that work?!

Thanks.

Update never works on rooted phones, i am not sure if this will work or not but you can give the unroot and update a try, otherwise try the factory reset option, keep your data backed up just in case.

Research seems to indicate a factory/hard reset simply removes all user data, not firmware updates! :(

Before trying to unroot and update (which I believe should work as long as I put the bloatware back on as I read somewhere it wont work otherwise ) I would like to simply find where the update was downloaded to and delete it!

So does anyone know how to delete failed OTA update files???

Thanks

Use root explorer and go into Data/cache/lost+found and also recovery. see If it's in there.

/data/cache/ is empty!
/cache/lost+found/ is empty!
/cache/recovery/ has a file called "last_log" which is only 7.23KB not 30mb! =(

Yes Im using ES File Explorer! What is root browser? is that another App?

Are you sure ES File Explorer wont show it? It is showing the files I mentioned...
/data/cache/ is empty!
/cache/lost+found/ is empty!
/cache/recovery/ has a file called "last_log"

Baring in mind I wiped the cache in recovery mode I would assume that explains why those folders are empty (bar the last_log)?!

This 30mb must be in another folder, or maybe it did install (as it started to install it but failed at 25%) or do you think my ES File Explorer app is not good enough?!

Thanks for your help!

From personal experience I found ES wouldn't show files that were actually there. Give root browser a try,it's a small file and you can easily uninstall it if there is still nothing there.

Oh really? Thats bad of ES!

Do you mean Root Browser Lite by JRummp Apps Inc?? If so I will give it ago thanks! :)

EDIT: Root browser had the same results as ES File explorer! =/

Also you could just unroot your phone, install the update then root it again.

Yeah as a last resort I was going to do that but it is a pain in the backside as I would have to reinstall the original bloatware apps first as apparently the update will not work unless the phone has the original files in the system AND apps, it checks apparently! =/ and then unroot it and then update it and assuming the update works then re root it and then remove the bloatware apps, this is a lot of time and hassle for me, would rather just delete this 30mb if possible?!

Why don't you just backup all your stuff and flash the latest firmware via Odin, root it and restore all your data. Its faster and less complicated.

I really didn't want to muck about with flashing, I'm a total noob and tbh it scares me in case I muck it up and also then there is warranty issues, doesn't flashing make the bootload value increase each time, thus voiding your warranty if the value is not at the stock value of 0?! I decided to root my phone with the understanding that if I did need to do a warranty claim I could reload the bloatware apps, factory reset the phone and then unroot it thus putting it back to stock mode and more importantly the bootload value will remain the same as the phone has not been flashed!

If the only way for me to get my 30mb of internal space back is to flash it with the stock rom, is there a guide on how to do it and where to download everything (odin)? I did a quick search earlier about this and found this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551156 Is there a better guide on here?!

This would be a LAST resort for me!

First I will try this root explorer as Gammer has suggested, though at the moment my phone is busy, I am using es file explorer to search through my phone for any files between 30 and 31mb installed yesterday, it is taking a long time scanning through the system files at present, fingers crossed!

if either of those don't work then I will try reinstalling bloatware apps, then unroot and then trying the OTA update again, then assuming it works do the reverse; root, remove bloatware apps. Yes a pain in the backside but Im scared to flash incase I muck it up and also warranty issues! If there was a very simple step by step guide for noob dummies on how to flash to stock firmware then it would encourage me more I guess.

Thanks for your help,
James.

This phone does not have a flash counter so flash as much as you want, as long as you show up with a non-rooted device running stock firmware, they will never know. :D :D
The guide you found seems pretty good, its simple and concise, what better do you want? Flashing via Odin is the same thing the service center people do when reinstalling/upgrading the firmware. Its the easiest solution to prove your phone is not rooted in case you had to take it to the service center.
Unrooting, installing apps and all is quite a big mess, your the first one i know of who prefers this instead of Odin. :p
Its a simple process and takes only 5 minutes, feed the software the required files, connect phone in download mode and press start, as long as you use the right files and make sure the phone does not disconnect until Odin says PASS, you have nothing to worry about. And you are under warranty right now, even if you muck it up, just go with an innocent face and tell them you were playing some game and it just turned off, they'll fix it for free. :p :D
This is the best time to experiment, after warranty you will think twice before trying something new.

Are you 100% sure the GT-S5830i does not have a bootload/flash counter?! I thought I had read somewhere ages ago it did?! If you are correct then GREAT! :D

Also if I was to reflash with stock firmware, should I unroot first?

Cheers.

EDIT: Just wondered does reflashing stock firmware effect whether your phone is locked or unlocked? In other words I hope it wouldn't make my phone locked to a certain network provider?!

I use ES root explorer. When you use it for the first time you have to enable certain features to give it root privileges. I had done it I Dec 2012 but that was on an older ver in the current ver I can t find that option. Maybe this will help Use ES File Explorer to Edit, Modify System Files on Android

I use S5830, it does not have a flash counter, i am very sure that s5830i also does not have it but still just confirm in the xda forums.
Its reinstalling the samsung stock firmware, stock is never rooted, so you just flash it and you will find yourself back to the day you bought your phone. Flash the version you want, according to your region and carrier(if you have a locked phone).

Just to wrap this up and in case it helps anyone else...

I decided to go down the root of reloading my old bloatware apps and then unroot my phone and then try the OTA update again, and then delete the bloatware and finally route my phone, but after I had reloaded the stock bloatware apps, the guide I was using to unroot my phone said to first do a factory reset, which I did and I was shocked to see the 190mb internal memory went from 125mb used to 30mb used! So I guessed it must have deleted the 30mb update, and therefore decided to simply uninstall the bloatware apps and reinstall my downloaded apps that had been deleted via the factory reset, luckily I had a backup of my contacts and texts etc on my pc so simply put them all back on my mob and then I can happily say with my mob back to normal my internal memory has now used 82mb rather than 125mb of the 190mb that it was at before! so I have saved 43mb when I was expecting to gain 30mb, so I am happy. Though I did note Titanium Backup shows the system rom memory to have 36mb free now (out of 232mb) where as it used to have 42.4mb free, even after the failed 30mb OTA update! Any ideas why I have 6.4mb less system rom memory now?! Its only a 3% difference roughly so I'm not that bothered lol, but would obviously preferred it not to have gone up!

A lot of hassle but we all live and learn; I have learnt NOT to try and update my phone as it is rooted! (Hindsight is a beautiful thing!!! lol)
