Root Help! Lost recovery trying to root and now I'm f'ed and confused

Okay, I don't know what the hell I did, but I really need some help here.

I tried to root my new replacement inc today and it's just turning into one big cluster***.

I followed the instructions in the how to root thread (http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-how-root-2-3-4-downgrade-get-s-off.html) and was just going down the list. Unrevoked didn't work for me no matter what options I tried. So I went to the next instructions and got as far as:
adb push flash_image /data/local/
adb push mtd0.img /sdcard/

adb shell

Once I was in the shell, I couldn't get to a # prompt so I gave up. I needed a break so I was going to browse the internet and that wasn't working. I saw that I no longer had 3G. I rebooted and still didn't have it. So I did the *228 thing. After that it all went to hell. My phone kept rebooting. Or it would look like it started up, and then rebooted itself soon after.

I was able to get it into safe mode and after that I can now at least use my phone.

But as said before, I can't even get into recovery anymore. I'm at a loss here and have been searching google for about 2 hours now and don't know what else to do.

To summarize,

I'm running stock android right now and am unrooted and have s-on.

Help!!!

FYI, I figured out how to get into recovery. I kept seeing the triangle with an exclamation mark whenever I tried to get into it. I just found out about the volume up + power key trick at that point. I'm still having major problems rooting this thing though. I posted in the guide above if anyone wants to try and help.
