Help me android geniuses!

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can recommend a good budget phone for me since you are all so knowledgeable in these matters :)

I currently have a Samsung Ace which I quite like except for the pitiful internal memory. I'm now at the stage where I have to delete data every couple of days because the internal memory is full. I certainly can't do anything crazy like downloading more apps or updating the apps I already have. I have deleted all the apps I feel I can live without, except the ones that are stuck on the phone. I've moved all the apps that can go on the SD card. I've tried rooting the phone without success, possibly due to my own stupidity.

So, I'm ready to move on and get a new phone. The problem is O2 won't let me upgrade until October. That being the case, I don't want to shell out for an expensive phone at the moment. I'm willing to spend up to

You might be able to get something for that money second hand - you could try ebay. You just need to be careful of rip off merchants - I think if you if the vendor lets you use PayPal then you at least have a chance of getting your money back from them if it all goes pear shaped.

I have moved this thread to the Device Comparison forums since you are probably going to get multiple device options here under your budget and they will be compared.

Hope this helps :)

Maybe check out the Galaxy Ace or Ace 2, Ace Plus.

as I see it..
you are stuck on O2 and you have a budget.
this limits you!

here is what I think your options are..
I dont think you should waste what $$ you have for a used low-tech phone. Because in Oct.. you will much more choices and freedom. The possibilities are more open to you.

as a stop gap .. for now..
1. try rooting it again.. so that you can get rid of some bloat.. use ROMs with less RAM usage... move more to SD.
2. find someone in area.. to root you phone for you. of course have them walk you through it.
3. delete more apps... you can always reload them, when you need them

Thanks for the replies.

SiempreTuna: The 2nd hand idea is something I hadn't thought of. Might look into that. I've never had any problems with ebay but I haven't bought anything at that sort of price before.

Digital Controller: Samsung Ace is the one I have now which I'm having so many problems with. I've had Samsung phones before and they've always been fine but I really don't think I can forgive them for this!

dan330: Some good points there. I guess I could try rooting the phone again but it was such a frustrating experience last time... The thing about the deletable apps I do have is that I pretty much use them all on a regular basis. I believe the worst offenders with regards to memory are Facebook and MyFitnessPal which I use daily. In all I only have 8 apps which I downloaded myself, I used to have more but one by one they were sacrificed because of the memory problem. I sort of feel if I have to get rid of more then I might as well not bother having a smartphone at all!

you only installed 8 apps... and it is having memory issues???

that just does not sound right.. what app is soo damn large?????

i think there is something else that is the issue.. please explain the memory issue more.. what is the error message? maybe others here might know the fix.

Now you see why I'm finding this so annoying! If it could be solved without getting a new phone I would be quite happy because the phone is otherwise fine for my needs.

Basically the phone tells me every couple of days that the internal memory is nearly full. This means I have less than 20mb of device memory left. I can't receive any text messages until I free up some space. I then delete data for a bunch of apps until the message goes away and I have about 24mb free. A few days later I get the message again and the process repeats. It happens immediately if I try to update an app, or heaven forbid download a new app, but might also happen when I am just surfing FB or whatever.

Currently I have 57mb free which is pretty good. Then I just logged in to myfitnesspal and it has gone down to 39mb. Every time I use certain apps they just seem to dump more and more crap onto the internal memory until there isn't enough left to do anything.
These are the apps that appear in my 'downloaded' list although some are not deletable:

  • Facebook 21mb
  • Myfitnesspal 21mb (SD card)
  • Accuweather 11mb
  • Maps 11mb
  • Google play store 10mb (shame I can't delete this since I can't buy new apps anyway)
  • Avast anti-theft 8mb
  • Avast mobile security 5mb
  • Voice Search 4mb
  • Strava cycling 3mb (SD card)
  • Goodreads 1mb (SD card)
  • Google search 1mb
  • HyperQuiz 0.93mb (SD card)
  • Street View 552kb
  • Trainline tickets 432kb (Sd card)
I used to have quite a few more but I just kept having to delete them to save space. Might be worth mentioning that the phone froze up completely once after giving me the 'low internal memory' message and got sent away to be fixed while the warranty was still valid. They wiped everything and I only re-downloaded the minimum to avoid this happening again. It has been all downhill since then.

What about pictures or sms media texts... Or do you texts lot

Look for stuff that is creating or copying in lots of stuff to RAM

text
Camera
Emails
Attachments
Cached news
Facebook

Samsung phones handle data differently dan330. The Drive for texts and contacts are kept separate from the apps and other stuff so they won't matter. What's probably killing the storage are cache and maybe pictures (since that defaults to phone memory).

Hi, thanks for the suggestions all. My photos are stored on the SD card, although I recently transferred most of them to my PC anyway just in case that was causing a problem. I do delete texts periodically. Just tried deleting them all just now as an experiment but it had no effect on the free memory.

When the memory is low I always empty cache first but there is usually not much in there so I have to resort to deleting data. Interestingly, comparing with my list from a week ago, Facebook and maps have accumulated another 8mb between them. So I can sort of see where all this data is coming from but there's not much I can do about it. If the phone didn't have such a stupidly small memory I don't think it would be causing a problem.

You may try downloading the dolphin browser (2m) and open facebook using dolphin. Dolphin loads fb faster then facebook app with same interface as facebook app. If you are happy with facebook on dolphin , then you can delete the facebook app and save a lot of internal memory.
