Help me identify what was done to my phone

I bought my phone as is and I have no idea what has been done to it to make it work on my carrier. I am still on Gingerbread and would like to upgrade to ICS.

This phone was originally from Rogers network, Canada and is now being used on Wind Mobile network, Canada

Here is the phone info

Model Number : SGH-I717R

Android Version : 2.3.6

Baseband Version : T989DTLKJ3

Kernel version : 2.6.35.11

Build Number : Gingerbread.248

I am an ultra-noob and I apologize in advance for that.

congrats on your new toy
you can upgrade to ICS via OTA (over-the-air) or via Kies (software from Samsung)
download the Kies software from the Samsung website
you can also goto settings-->about phone-->software update-->update
this will and should give you the new ICS update
of course if none of these works, then your unit could be rooted, but that's a whole different story. Try that and see...let me know if you need help

Tried that, Kies cannot be used to update my device. I tried OTA updates too and my phone doesnt pick any up. I am pretty sure its already rooted. I dono any more than that.

You are correct. The phone you own is rooted and running a custom ROM. Unfortunately I don't know more as I am using stock and have not rooted. Only suggestion is to go to XDA developer site and search their forums for stock i717R ROM. I'm sure you'll find it there.

ok, now that we know, please have a look at the following link:

you'll have to do quite a bit of reading to understand how to unroot/root your device
If you are in the Montreal area, let me know..maybe we can meet up and fix your problem

you will need Odin for this - http://dl.xda-developers.com/attach...8ce49abd/502d4100/5/8/1/9/1/3/Odin3-v1.85.zip
you will need to put your phone in download mode, hold the volume down and the power button for about 5-6 seconds, you will feel a vibration. Let go of the power, but keep your finger on the volume down, once you see the yellow yield sign, you are in download mode
enter the files in to Odin and press the volume UP to get into download mode.
Then hit the Start in Odin, takes about 5 min at the most, never real timed it...
with these files, your Note will be reverted to its original state
