Root Help me out, step by step root process, I'm a newb

I have a moment with 2.1, and its been getting slow lately, and everytime i go to task killer, there are useless apps open, like Nuance and Sprint Football.
If i root my phone, will i have to call sprint to re activate the ESN? or iis the phone still activated?
So can someone give me steps and the best ROM to use? I would like to have the wifi tethering also

Rooting or installing alternate roms doesn't require calling Sprint. Your phone will remain activated, though installing a new rom will wipe require the wiping of all data off the phone (updating the same rom may not require this). You will need to input your gmail account and install apps (or restore from backup). It may seem daunting the first time, but once you've flashed your first rom it becomes almost laughably easy. Once you have rooted and installed an alternate recovery, you will no longer need a computer to flash, instead everything is done through recovery and flashing is a 2-3 minute exercise (set up and restore from backup are additional).
 
So I got all the necessary files, cl14,dj07, recovery and froyo file. My phone has 2.1 right now, and when I go to swupgrade, and I get the phone into the mode where it transfers files, it says detect port, disconnected. I've tried restarting, unplugging over and over and reinstalling swupgrade, and no avail. Help me out please

install revo uninstaller and make sure you fully delete all the swuupgrade files. then reinstall swuupgrade, follow the directions in the sdx thread, and it should work.
 
So I've reinstalled CL14 so many times, and tried plugging it in an out over and over again, and it still says Detect port-Disconnected at the bottom. I got the Dj07 files, and the recovery one in the binary folder. Still won't detect my phone, and I'm getting real frustrated because My moment has been getting slow lately.
