Help HELP! Native email app using 1GB data/day!

Hi,
I have a galaxy s6 active, unlocked to use on Tmobile
The screen broke (break resistant my a$$), so I sent to Samsung for repair. They sent back with updated OS to 6.01.

First thing that happened is I set it to battery saver, as always. And I did not get my work emails. For a few days I got nothing except when home. I would sync manually, and nothing. Was awful. Missed client emails, etc. After lots of research, I find that the OS update apparently came with change to battery saver- now it automatically cuts off almost ALL background data. So had to go into battery settings and manually flip on background data for email.
Things were ok for a few days.
Then I get a text message saying I'd used 8GB of data prior to end of monthly billing cycle. I don't think I've EVER exceeded 6GB data. Even when playing a data heavy game for hours a day.
2 days later, I get message saying I'd used up all 10GB of my data!

New billing cycle started on the 13th. Yesterday I get warning that I'd used 8GB! That is just 11 days into cycle. I work from home and my phone is on WIFI 18 hours per day. I look at data usage- almost all of it is the native email app!
I have not changed anything since the background data. I go to Tmobile store and they say the data seemed to have spiked in the past 2-3 days. WTF? I have not received any large attachments, nothing.
In fact, I've had fewer emails than usual. So what is going on? How could email use up THAT much data in such a short period of time?
I've set it to sync for 1 month, and to show images. However, I've always had these settings without issue.
What's more, I've been unable to download attachments lately- i get message "load more" but when I try, it doesn't show me the attachment.

What is going on and how do I fix it?!

Hi

In settings
wifi

have you checked that smart network switch is off? If you have a very strong/fast mobile data connection, it could cause it to be used in preference to wifi.

This cannot explain the volume of data though - 1Gb per day seems a huge amount unless you are tethering to a PC and downloading OSes!

Thanks for the reply- the switch was and is off.

I've looked into this issue and find older threads by people with same experience. But those appeared to be caused by a bug in older versions of Android and I didn't see a solution. So not sure what to do. I am definitely NOT getting a ton of emails. Certainly no more than i have past few years, when my data use was normal.
I have checked my outbox for a stuck email, and looked in my photo gallery to see if an attachment has been downloaded repeatedly (all things I read about)- but none of this appears to be the case in my situation.

Anyone??
