Help needed! New to Android.

Lurker
Hello,

I am a relative new user to android,

I was just wondering, I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830

Is it possible to update my phone to the newest android OS upgrade? no matter how old the phone is?

Thanks,
Playrules :)

Amzingly it appears that you can. Look up user ayush29k he installed a hybrid Jellybean ROM on his Galaxy Ace but unfortunately I couldn't find a guide on how to do it on this site. If you check through his posts though you will find some mention of where he found one. The stuff he used to do it appears in his signature.

But, can you do it by simply going to your settings and going to software update?

What I am basically saying is that are certain android phones stuck to a certain firmware, or are all android phones able to be updated to the current firmware, regarding the fact that they have the required storage and internet access? rather than installing it by third party software.

Your phone was released in 2011 with gingerbread 2.3. It's 2013 and the latest is jellybean 4.1.2 and looking towards key lime pie. If Samsung hasn't released an update then they likely never will. It's just not worth their time to update you.

3rd party ROMs are likely your only chance of seeing an upgrade and are often better than stock.

Android 4.2.2 is the latest and that's still Jellybean. Stay away from 4.0.3 most ppl say ICS is complete crap compared to Jellybean on most phones lol. I believe you'll like a "3rd party software" way of installing the latest Android version anyways because it's almost always better than stock, over clocking, theming, just about anything you can think of. :)

Fair enough,

But is downloading 3rd Party Software legal? As in, it won't break the warranty or terms of conditions of android?

Another thing,

Is downloading 3rd Party software updates difficult to install, or relatively simple?

Android is open source. However, it's generally against terms and conditions and warranty of the carrier to modify devices. It's your choice if you believe you should be able to modify the device you own against your carrier's wishes.

It isn't normally difficult to root and install roms. Google "[device name] root" or find the device's sub-forum here. Then move on the finding a ROM you like.

Samsung has been notorious for never supporting any device they make with software updates...

Not sure about that. The two year old Tab 7 Plus is getting Jellybean. Its already seeding in Europe. Its more of other reasons. However in the case of the Galaxy Ace, its a hardware thing. The Galaxy Ace has a weaker spec sheet than the old Nexus S. It can't handle the official ICS update. Even the ICS ROM for it is a modified version with lots of features removed.

So, these ROMs are essentially upgraded firmware, but by a 3rd Party?

or are they are more like jailbreaking software?

No, jailbreak is like rooting, its just getting admin access. ROMs are basically third party Android installers.

For example, Samsung phones use a Samsung made Android ROM, while HTC uses their own ROM. CM ROMs are Android ROMs prepared by the CM team.

Ahh, now I understand.

Well, thank you for your support, it is really appreciated :)
