[Help needed - please please] Regarding app space dynamics

Hey, can anybody think of cases, in either Google Play (or iOS app store), showing how a single-function/focused app is threatened by a larger, multi-function app that adds that functionality for free (as just another feature of the larger app)? (a la Netscape versus Microsoft+Explorer, to give a well-known, old example). I am particularly interested in what can the single-function apps do to survive these threats by larger players. Just any tips or thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

1) Marketing: Use social media/forums to spread the word.
2) Look & feel/Design:again,SEE #1,ask users to evaluate & provide feedback.
3) Offer an ad-free version/PRO/DONATE,I myself pay for all apps that I use regularly if there's an option to do so,whether this is necessary in removing the ads or not.
A LOT of people want the option to remove ads,I strongly recommend giving them this option.In turn,they'll spread the word for you..................
