Hi Folks,

I am planning to buy the Nexus 5 without a contract in Germany as I am currently residing here. My question is would I be able to use it back in India ? Are the bands similar in both countries ?

Hoping for your answer soon..

Thanks and Regards,
Anindya

If you buy the phone on contract - i.e. subsidised by a network - it will almost certainly be locked so that it can only be used with that network (they did pay for the phone, after all).

Once the contract period (usually 2 years these days) is complete - or when you buy out the contract - EU rules oblige the network to allow you to unlock the phone for use on other networks (they are allowed to charge a small fee for this).

You might be better off buying the phone outright from the Play Store, that way you can get take a SIM-only deal with any network, including ones in India.

But the OP wants to know whether the bands are the same in Germany and India.

I'm afraid I don't know, but I'm sure someone on here must do.

I'm not 100% certain, but you should be fine. Perhaps just check with the vendor when you purchase it. If you buy it from a retailer, they should be able to tell you accurately.

I can't say 100% but as far as I know, US and international models are the same and support the same bands.

You can probably check the specs in both play stores just to be sure they have the bands you need but here is the Nexus 5 on
Germany Play Store - http://www.google.de/nexus/5/

India Play Store - http://www.google.co.in/nexus/5/

And I realize your question was more about what bands are used in Germany and India, but as a US citizen, I really don't know. Good luck!!

If both models support the same bands, that's a pretty good indicator that it will work in both locations.

Okay...

Bands supported on German model:
NETZWERKE
2G/3G/4G LTE*Nordamerika:GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHzCDMA: Bandklasse: 0/1/10WCDMA-Frequenzband: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19LTE-Frequenzband: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41*Rest der Welt:GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHzWCDMA-Frequenzband: 1/2/4/5/6/8LTE-Frequenzband: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Bands supported on Indian model:
NETWORKS
2G/3G/4G LTE*North America:GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHzCDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41*Rest of World:GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHzWCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

Looks like they support the same bands so I would venture to say it will work in both countries.

Thank you guys for the response. I was too excited to wait and purchased it anyway. I bought it from Saturn as they were offering it in a slight lesser price. They said it should work.

and now I did my own research substantiated by your data and it seems I should be fine..

Thanks again.. :D
