Coming from an iPhone you could say I'm a little lost. But one step at a time, my biggest issue right now is how do I keep the screen on when plugged into a power source.? With an iPhone, once plugged into a power source the screen doesn't time out, it dims but lightens back up once the screen is touched. This is especially good for using the music player while driving. On the iPhone if there's a song you don't like, just touch the screen to skip to the next song. With the s3 you have to bring it out of sleep mode every time .
Even at night time when I set my clock it still fails to stay on, what's the point of have a clock if you can't see it? Help!!

I cannot find that option to keep the screen on while when docked or charger is plugged in. You could try Tasker. Tasker is an app that gives you a lot more control of what to do in various situations. Perhaps someone more familiar with it can comment. You could also do a search on Tasker to find out more. I believe there are some very good YouTube videos about how to use it.

Anybody else know how to keep the screen on while plugged into a power source?

There's not a setting and for good reason too. If your screen automatically overrides time out at plug in, you'd get a lot of unhappy customers reporting screen burn. We have LED screens and they are prone to screen burn so this will not be a setting.

Tasker would do it though, yes

Welcome to the forum
I'm not sure if this option is on ics or new to jellybean. But on jellybean you can go to settings, developer options and tick stay awake

OP: If your car has an aux in socket look at the Belkin Aircast - this gives you handsfree in the car but also lets you stream music.. the main interface is a button, which you can tap twice for "next track". Screen doesn't need to be on, thus saving battery :)

I stand corrected.

Be careful then. Don't burn your Widgets and icons into your screen.

Why on earth did samsung leave developer options visible?

Yeah it does seem a risky move. There are a couple of options in there which are handy but most of them I wouldn't recommended playing around with.

With regard to music in the car, my car has BlueTooth audio capabilities. I can use the dashboard controls to skip to the next song or repeat a song. The name of the song also shows up on my car stereo display and I can cycle through the artist, album and track number info.

^ yeah its all part of the protocol. I assumed that the OP was connecting via cable, but maybe he is already using BT and didn't know you could use the vehicle controls

I'm actually plugging the phone into the booster( which charges my phone while plugged into the booster)on my company truck which doesn't have built in Bluetooth. So I'm using an aftermarket BT device to connect my phone to FM stereo. I can skip to the next song using the BT box, but it's kind of a pain to constantly reach up to change the song, it's on my visor. Plus I like to see what the next song is before letting it play, weird I know...haha!

With the iPhone it's not a problem, plus it dims the screen while playing.

But if it's bad on the screen on the S3 I guess a person should avoid it.

Thanks for all the advice.

There is an awesome app in the Market called "Car Tunes" it keeps the screen on, has voice controls, and swipe gestures. I use it all the time while driving

Thanks, been a great forum, lots of reading! I don't see it on ICS. Is JB ready for download?

It depends on your model, carrier and location. Jellybean has been rolling out on the international version all month but there are still a few carriers which haven't received the update. It should be available to all international s3's by the end of the month. The update for the US versions should begin at the start of next month.
