Help Help on Charging Issue! :( Brand New Tablet

Autumn22

Lurker
I just got my ASUS Transformer in the mail yesterday with the keyboard dock too. It didn't come with a manual or anything, literally just the charger, tablet, and dock so I didn't charge it for 8 hours before turning it on for the first time like it says to do in the other forums. ...But I hardly used it last night and then left it charging (attached to the keyboard dock) overnight. This morning when I turned it back on it only had 25% battery on the tablet and the dock was completely dead. It appeared not to be charging (says it's not charging and blinking orange light on keyboard dock plugged in or unplugged) no matter what I did. I tried:

Plugging into wall charger with keyboard dock attached
Plugging into wall charger without keyboard dock
Different outlets w/ and w/o keyboard dock
USB directly to computer
All of these options with tablet on and off

The thing is that when I plug a different USB charger into the wall adapter (ie. my phone charger) it works, when I plug the tablet USB cable into my computer the computer recognizes the tablet, and when I plug the USB for the tablet into the wall adapter for my phone (which I know works) it doesn't charge either. I'm just not really sure what else to try :( Could it be a problem with the tablet battery itself? What should I try before sending it back (because I really don't want to have to do that..)?

Thanks!
Autumn

Sounds to me like you've got an issue with the battery. I've got the tablet and dock. Both will charge completely. If you've tried charging each by themselves and they're not charging then I would send them back.

There is one other possibility. The charger sent is not the correct charger. This tablet needs a 15v charger. You can hook it to a standard phone charger and it will charge but it will take a very, very long time.

What charger have you got? The tablet needs a 15v supply, whereas USB is only 5v. The Asus will charge with 5v but it will take at least 30 hours. So make sure you have the right rated wall charger to start with and don't try to charge it via your computer's USB port.

Also if you have the Asus charger it has a USB slot in it. In order to make sure that you don't fry a standard USB gadget when you plug it in the charger normally outputs only 5v. However it senses when you have plugged in your tablet and increases that to 15v. But to do that you need a USB lead that is USB3 compatible. The standard one that Asus supplies works (obviously!) but some 3rd party suppliers' leads do not.

Thanks for replying guys! The charger says ASUS on it and it seems like it is the right charger but I am going to try and send everything in for exchange anyways. I feel like I've tried everything and it's really frustrating but bottom line is that the warranty is still good and I can just send it back.

I agree with your decision Autumn. It should have work right out of the box. Just remember to get a full charge on it this time. Tablet and dock too. ;)

Could be the right charger and wrong cable. Really, it could be a # of things. Like I said earlier though, it should have worked properly right out of the box.

I think you'll be very happy with it when you get one that works properly. I've had mine for almost a year now and love it! That dock really comes in very handy too not to mention the added battery life you'll get.

If you have a flat screen with an HDMI input I highly recommend getting the micro-HDMI to HDMI cable. I use my tablet for watching movies on the TV all the time. Playing games too! :)

I also use the app Tablet Talk which allows me to connect via bluetooth to my phone so I can send and receive text via the tablet. It also allows me to make phone calls too. It's was a great investment IMHO. :D
