Help Help! People say I sound garbled/under water

GSM Gnex that I bought from google directly. The problem started 2 days ago. People are having a hard time hearing me so it seems to be a mic issue. Anybody have this happen before and where to I start troubleshooting? Thanks in advance.

If you think it is a hardware issue try using a bluetooth or plug-in headset with mic. That will let you know if it is the built-in microphone or not.

just tested. bluetooth works fine so it's gotta be something with the build in mic. people can still barely hear me so it seems it's not completely dead. suggestions? thanks.

Since we know it is the built-in mic now there are only three possible solutions that I can think of.

- debris blocking the mic. Carefully use a pin if you can find a very fine one that would fit. But that hole is so small, if there is anything in the hole you will end up probably just pushing it in more. A suction device?

- find someone qualified (or try yourself if you know what to do) to open the phone and check for debris

- the built-in mic is simply dead/dying or there is a lose connection. You can get that repaired, but it may not be worth the price.

i've also seen some posts out there that say upstream issues or software problems. your take on that?

One other thing you can try for kicks, is to use a voice recorder app or whatever, just take a short note on the phone with the built in mic, to see if it's only when in calls, or if it's all the time. That will also eliminate the chance of it being a network congestion or any other network related issue, since you're recording on the local device itself.

thats a good idea. i just tried google now which has worked fine forever and...no go. seems its the hardware or could be software. where do i go from here?

i would use a vacuum before pushing a pin in the mic hole

I agree almost nothing can fit in the mic hole. So any kind of vacuum that would be strong enough to pull something out would be your first choice.

I'm guessing that if that doesn't work you will need to have the phone opened up. To either remove debris or fix/replace the microphone. A trained professional can do this. But for a similar price I bet you could get a whole brand new Galaxy Nexus off ebay, etc.

At this point, it seems hardware is the most likely culprit. If it was a software thing, it should've cleared up with a reset. So at this point, it comes down to one of two or three options. First, if it's still under your 1 yr warranty from your purchase, you can contact Google and see about getting it replaced under that. Not sure their policy, but it might be a "send it back, and we'll fix it and return it" which would probably leave you phoneless for however long that takes. If you don't have a warranty left on it, then you're down to either sending it back anyway, and paying for a repair job on it. Or, repairing it yourself by purchasing a new microphone setup. I believe it's contained along with the USB port, this should show you the steps. It actually doesn't look too bad, as long as you don't rush it.

Would just be a matter of getting the right parts, just in case there are any differences.
