Root HELP PLEASE!! Can't flash amon ra using ROM MANAGER. :(

toneng

Newbie
Hi,

I am trying to root and install custom rom on my hero. I have the 2.1 official update and using the tutorial by Xyro for 2.1 OS. everything went smoothly until I try to flash amon ra via rom manager. I followed the steps from "choosing flash clockworkmod recovery" to update it and it is 2.5.0.7. I rebooted the phone and now try to click the last option which is "All clockwork recovery" but getting a pop out that says "No legacy found, are you connected to the internet?".

I am indeed connected to internet.

Am i doing it correctly? what should i do to flash the amon ra, i badly need help and will really appreciate it.

flashrec does not work for me either, it says backup failed.

thanks in advance.

Hi toneng,

The ROM manager has been updated since I wrote that post and some options have been rearranged. The last option is no longer the one you want. You want to use 'Flash Alternate Recovery', which is now the second to last option. I've updated the guide to reflect that too :)

Thanks for he quick reply! :)

I noticed that change as I am browsing for answer while i'm waiting for a response. But the problem is the second to the last option which is "Flash alternate recovery is not highlighted, I cannot tick on it. It says "No alternate recovery available". :(

I have the recovery-RA-her0-v1.6.2 in the root of my Sdcard so i don't know why it says that.

BTW my battery is close to empty now, does it have something to do with it?

thanks again.. i'll wait for the answer. :)

Edit:

In addition, I also tried amon RA 1.7 (I guess that's the latest and I tried it first) but had the same result, that is the reason why I somehow thought that v1.6.2 might nail it but as i stated earlier I can't flash it.

One more question :) I am thinking of flashing Elelinux 7.1 Hero-v3.6 android 2.3.7. do you think this is a good rom? if not which version of elelinux is the best? I read the comparisons but I just want to hear your opinion. :)

Thanks again. :)

any help guys? :(

I restored factory settings out of frustration in hope that it will make everything work but I still got the "alternate recovery" greyed out".

what should i do? :(

I tell you what, you should just use the clockwork recovery instead of amon ra. Since writing the guide you're reading, I myself have started using clockwork in stead and I would recommend it. For one thing, having clockwork on there lets you make full use of ROM manager.

Just put the .zip file of the ROM you want to use on your sdcard and open up ROM manager. Pick the option to 'install ROM from sdcard'. It will ask you if you want to backup and whether to wipe/factory reset the phone. Tick all three boxes and the phone will boot to recovery and install your ROM for you.

And yes, I would definitely recommend elelinux :)

thank you very much!

I am thinking of doing that but i'm just afraid to do so without an "expert advise" :)

I know that this might not be useful now but what exactly amon ra does and why it is needed? I just want to understand for future reference maybe. :)

But you really helped me alot already! thanks! i'll go and try the latest elelinux rom. :)

Amon ra and clockwork are really actually similar, I just recommended amon ra because I was more familiar with it at the time.

They are both custom recovery menus. The original android recovery menu exists just in case your phone won't boot, and lets you factory reset. Custom recovery menus replace the stock android one and add lots of useful functionality. Mainly it allows you to flash new firmware and backup firmware.

Now, because the recovery menu was originally designed to repair phones that can't boot, using the recovery menu means the android OS must be shutdown. If you do that, the touchscreen won't work. So you have to navigate the recovery menu using buttons, and its a bit of a pain.

That's where ROM manager comes in. If you tell rom manager to flash new firmware (like I mentioned above), it leaves a set of instructions for the recovery menu before booting into recovery.

So the main difference is that rom manager will only work with clockwork recovery, since they had the same developer. If you take from manager out of the equation, amon ra and clockwork are essentially the same.

thanks so much for the detailed explanation. Now I understand their functionality.

I really appreciate the help! so much! It's so great to have people that are very much willing to help and answer questions for a noob like me.

Cheers!:)

do you have any idea whyI can't get download manager from the market, the only option is the update which still requires the free one installed first?

Any help appreciated

Hmm. What does it say about it here?

It's says that the app is not compatible with my Hero. If it says the same when you log in that would explain why you cant see it.

You can get the .apk from their website here though.
