Root Help remove phone lag?

Hey guys. I have a question and in wondering if anyone can help me out! First off, I have a Virgin Mobile LG Volt that is Rooted with towelroot and i did not update firmware from 3 to 4 because i heard it erases root, and you cannot root the 4 once you updated. I have removed all the bloatware ,and I only downloaded a handful of apps which most of them i was able to move to my 16GB SD card. For some reason my phone is laggy and runs slow. I restart it frequently and always kill running apps with Advanced Task Killer.

Is there any way to make my phone run smoother and faster?

1.2ghz phones are laggy by nature (opinion), in the past a custom kernel that allowed overclocking helped alot but not sure if the volt is capable of that yet. what i would try is installing greenify, and then turn on the root features to keep unnecessary apps hibernated when not in use.

Are you using the most efficient apps for your setup?

GSam Battery Monitor might help shed some insights on that. Narrow down apps that are always waking up your phone and babbling for no apparent reason with Wakelock Detector.
