Root help request rooting

hi, my desire keeps randomley turning on and off, when does this cant do a thing, have to take out the battery and leave it a while.
i have been told i need to reflash my rom, so i found instructions on how to do this, but said i had to root the desire first
i followed the instructions to the letter for rooting with unrevoke3, but after the program run, it said "unable to root, is your firmware to new?"
pls i need assistance

I wouldn't root a broken phone.
Instead I would try a factory reset. If that doesn't work out then I'd try the 2.3RUU from shipped ROMs.

I know some models are prone to overheat but I don't know which model.

If you can boot into hboot
(power on holding volume down)
And post all the details.

That will also help if you still decided to root.

PVT 1 versions are prone to overheating.

You could try applying the official gingerbread update from http://www.shipped-roms.com/download.php?category=android&model=Bravo&file=HTC_Desire_Android_2.3_Upgrade.zip but this would wipe all your data (like factory reset).

If that doesn't work desires have a 2 year warranty.
