Root Help Rooting and Flashing Captivate 2.2

I was helping a friend with his new captivate today and noticed that alot of things were different, so I tried reupdating mine in case samsung released a newer version of 2.2, since I updated the first day it was out. (HUGE MISTAKE) He even had a newer version of swype.

So I started researching and found that Serendipity is way better than the stock ROM. So I started to follow their instruction, but after 3 hours of searching and many failed attempts, I have yet to find a way, or succeed to root my phone, in order to use titanium back up to backup everything.

Everything I found related to root, was back in 2010 before the official US version was out.

Questions:
Is there a root update.zip yet? superoneclick gets stuck on waiting for device.
Does T. BackUp save app data, like scores and such, and back up settings of apps?
And more detailed instructions for installing serendipity.

I already have swype beta and can install it with the sideloader if needed.

PHONE:
Baseband:I897UCKB1
Kernel:2.6.32.9
Build:Froyo.uckb1

Any Help would be much appreciated.

WHy not use the one click root it was so simple for me to root my cappy with it it took 15 minutes.

All that is really needed is the proper update.zip for clockwork mod recovery. This is copied using adb to /sdcard/ then you can type Adb reboot recovery. In recovery, you apply the update.zip to get into clockwork.

Once in clockwork you simply choose the zip to apply, point to the ROM zip and its done.

Tried one click, got stuck on waiting for device.
I have yet to find an update.zip for official 2.2 that works, and I have tried 4 different ones.

will try the AIO tomorrow.

andwhat is clockwaor and adb? I saw that in a lot of the threads i looked at but, I never found an explanation, everyones directions never made sense cuz they said all of this stuff I didnt understand.

The thing is, If I cant get my phone better, then I will have to buy a better phone outright.

also, in case this fails and my phone breaks, what would I do?

Thanks,
Havoc

I flashed the Serendipity ROM two days ago.
It wasn't that difficult to be honest except the fact that my three button wasn't working at all. I rooted using SuperOneClick, you said it was stuck at waiting for device but really simple question, was usb debugging on? If so, then maybe you should try flashing it back to stock 2.1 using Odin and then try using SuperOneClick. Those are my only two cents and I hope you figure out whats wrong.

I found SuperOneClick to work well on a Captivate with stock 2.2. It's worth noting that the phone will not seem successfully rooted until after rebooting.

The AIO toolbox has also worked for many but it's such a massive download (if all you're trying to do is root) that I can't suggest it as a first choice solution.
