Help saving Battery Power

My phone lasts for a good amount of time, but I checked today and one of the apps that's using around 34% of battery is Facebook. Even though I use a task killer to stop it it re-opens in the background using up battery power (even when I'm signed out). Is there anyway to prevent apps from doing this w/o being rooted? If there are apps that can help feel free to let me know please.

Task killers close apps, but android wants to open them again in cache, so it can be used again without loading it very long. My opinion about task killers is to stay away, android itselfs does a great job at managing it.

Is there an option in the facebook app in settings for how often it needs to connect to the internet? (I never used it)

Ah okay, so I won't use Task Killers anymore then. And I don't think I saw one under it. I was hoping for one through its settings.

There should be something in settings>accounts and sync (the android settings menu) to change the amount of time between when it pulls down data

I use Juicedefender, haven't noticed anything but it's not like I've been keeping track of time. It's got good reviews, I suggest you try it.
It helps to completely kill the phone, then charge it full, and whenever you're sure you're not using it for a while, shut it off and put it on charge.
Turn off wireless you aren't using (juicedefender does this well). You can quickly put it on airplane mode by holding the power button and selecting it, when you're not using wireless or the phone.
If you use Dolphin, download it's Dolphin Companion add on.

I would suggest a task killer because though android does do a fine job with it, it still leaves unnecessary apps in the background. Go for ES Task Manager, it's a task killer as well as a cache cleaner and a power optimizer (ends unnecessary stuff and tweaks settings for more battery)

That's all I've got.

I wouldn't do anything with a task killer. If you kill an app, android itself is likely to reopen it just to keep it in cache for faster loading. Android is fine at managing itself at this point, to be honest.

I checked and there isn't. It only lets me sync or remove said account.

You can uncheck that. All it does is sync your facebook friends to your contacts on the phone. When you first logged into the fb app it asked if you wanted to do this. I always check no. Also another thing I've done is go into settings, data usage, scroll to facebook, and check restrict background data. Now, this only restricts it over your network data connection, not wifi, so it may not help too much. Also, you won't get notifications from fb for messages and stuff until you open the app so you might not want to do that.

But surely, you don't have to have it checked to sync under your accounts and everything still works the same.

Typically we advocate against task killers here as they usually do more harm than good.

I like juice defender alot and use it on all my devices. I know it definitely saves me some juice on my Gnex :)

Judging based on the battery percentages isn't very accurate. It is on a 100% scale, so there will always be something eating up a large part of your battery. If you use your phone for 10 minutes only on Facebook, that will be the majority the battery life. That is only useful if there is something unexpected, like media server (known issue with some S3 ROMs).

Depending on your phone, the task killer COULD be an option. Not a good one, but an option. If you have less than 256k of RAM, it's plausible. If you have a newer phone with 1+gb, don't touch a TK.

Android doesn't work like a computer. It doesn't need large amounts of RAM to launch and run programs. In android, it reserves some RAM for that purpose. The additional RAM is used to cache apps so they can be resumed quicker. Open RAM is wasted RAM. Your phone will likely appear slower when launching apps. TK increasing efficiency is a stigma that has stuck with Android. They are obsolete now.

TLDR: Don't use percentages, don't use task killers on new phones.

I agree with whoever said use "Juice Defender" I just downloaded that app like a week ago and I have honestly gotten like 50% more battery use out of my phone. The app recognizes use patterns and things that you do on your fun to help you save more battery.

Yea shutting down the phone helped it speed up. Guess ill be doing that at least twice a week than. I'll try out juice defender, thanks for the replies Guys.

I have a samsung droid and would like to share one of my issues and see if any of you have experienced this.
Plug in and charge your phone before you go to bed, turn it off and unplug it, in the morning try and turn it on. Mine was dead, and its not very old ( almost 1 year) Im an electronics tech and know all about batteries and how to charge them for optimal capability.
This is what Ive experienced just last night. I charged my phone (1 yr old droid) completely and then turned it off and unplugged it, woke up this morning and it was completly dead. Charged it and it lasts all day.
Anyone experience this?
My conclusion is either I have a horrible battery (which I seriously dought since it works normally when charged stays all day depending on use) or my apps are using my juice as I sleep without the phone being on.
I suspect this is the reason because why would they put in the permissions of most apps now, that they can access the internet and all of my data, phone lists, posting to the internet on my behalf and even over write any of my info or programs. It makes me really suspiscious of what the hell is going on when Im not using my phone.
Try this yourself, especially if you have a bunch of apps.
Most people do like I have for the last several years, they leave their phone plugged in overnight ( I know I did for years with no notice of battery issues, even now) So why was my phone dead in the morning when it was turned off???
APPS!!
SO now Im gonna clean my phone of apps that require any admin access to my personal info, internet, phone features like my camera or audio or allowed to overwrite my info , post on my behalf, or even power on if turned off.
No app needs to access my passwords, personal info contacts, data and certainly dont need full access to the internet camera or audio when the phone is off!
I really suspect something aweful is happening here without our knowledge.
Any ones insight would be appreciated here, especially anyone willing to experiment with me to find out the real issue be it battery or juice theft by app
