Help Help: SD card is being used as a mass storage device

Oimie

Newbie
I need help with my Samsung Galaxy S2 i1900 guys. I cannot access my gallery and anything associated with it (camera, some apps and etc.). When I attempt to open gallery (and others) I receive a pop up that says "SD card is being used as a mass storage device" I didn't drop it or mess with the settings. This problem just came out of nowhere.

More details:
- Occasionally I'll get a notification on the scroll down menu that says "USB storage damaged. It may need reformatting."
- When I connect it to my computer with the USB, the drive doesn't show up on "My Computer" (it usually does). IT DOES HOWEVER show up on my "Devices and Printers" on the "Control Panel" as a connected device.

I already did some researching on Google and found no solution that works. Anyone had this problem before and fixed it? Anyone have any idea how to fix it? I'll reformat or Factory reset if I need to, but I want to see if there are any alternative solutions since I don't want to lose my files. Thanks in advance.

have you tried 'airdroid' ?? that could allow you to see things...

other wise...have you been a bit rough with the USB?? something might have got stuck/ broken?? Or even some thing small has got ito the pport, and managed to short the contacts??

I guess you dont mean the sdcard you plugin, surely? {homer} :) :)

Just for clarification, are we talking about the internal SD card partition or is there a physical external SD card in your phone?

lunatic59: Apparently BOTH. I took the Micro SD out of the phone and turned on the phone again to see if I could access the files that are on the memory of the phone. Still the same problem. I then placed the Micro SD into an external USB (it came together when I bought it) and plugged it into my computer. I could not access the files either. It is just greyed out on "My Computer" as "Removable Disk (F:)". And when I double click it, it says "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (F:)."

comnut: I don't think that's the problem. I tried to access my Micro SD card with an external USB. It didn't work.

Okay, a few more questions ... are you rooted? Have you formatted the partitions in a non-standard way? (Ext3?) It really does sound like there's corruption going on here, but it's unusual that both internal memory and an external SD card go at the same time, unless you've exposed your phone to a very strong magnet.

lunatic59: Not really sure what rooted is. I live in New York and wanted the i1900 model of the S2. Unfortunately the i1900 models don't support T-Mobile so I had to order one online that was factory unlocked which I have no idea what that means either.
I highly doubt it was the caused of a magnet. I was at home the whole day and it was working properly one minute, and not working the next. From what I read online, I suspect that it probably got glitched when I disconnected the phone from my computer, causing it to be stuck somewhere in between being connected to my computer and not. That could explain while both cards are having problems.

If you pulled the cord while it was doing a diskwrite, you most certainly could have caused the problem. Android should perform it's own disk check, but sometimes you just have to reformat the whole volume.

lunatic59: I've posted the same problem on multiple forums and no one has been able to help me so I'm planning to just reformat it. By the way do you know what "factory data reset" will do to my phone? Or to be more specific, will it have any negative impact on my phone because my phone was "factory unlocked" in order for me to be able to use T-Mobile service here in New York.

A factory reset will remove any installed apps and clear user data, putting the phone back to the state it was in when it is first turned on. It won't effect the unlocked status. A factory reset doesn't necessarily reformat the storage, however. You must do that from menu>settings>storage

I have the SGH-i727 and have begun experiencing the same issue (SD card mounted as mass storage device). Running 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

Did you resolve your issue?

this same 'problem' started after have had Samsung sII about 2.5 years.
Recently uploaded about 10 new and popular apps, also started using screen shot to snap reminders from my phone activities.

When I get the error message sd card being used as mass storage device I cant access anything from my gallery. And I cannot capture a acreen shot. I get a new message ...couldnt capture screenshot storage may be in use.

I have never opened the phone, never tampered with any sd card, didnt even know this phone had an sd cafd.

so far it fixes if I shut down foe a short while and turn back on. if that doesnt work (actually sometimes it is frozen and will not even shut down) THEN i have go take off back and take out battery and replace battery and turn back on.: confused: worried its going to just die one day should I keep paying the monthly fee for repair, because this doesnt seem to be something I could put in for repair

nope ... still does it, and still can fix it by shut off and turn back on...so I can still function with this problem, I just want to use it for the remainder lf my contract term til March then I'll get them to give me a new phone (otherwise i love this phone)
