Help [Help] Storage On HTC Desire

Lurker
I have been looking around, and they have been saying that it is good to get rid of diacry cache (Or something like that...)
Also, I have just factory reset my Desire and I have downloaded the apps, and they seemed to leave a huge bit of memory on the phone internal storage after moving them to the external storage.

Yes, moving to sd only moves part of the app and none of the data. It moves more of some apps with 2.3 than 2.2, so upgrading to that might help bit. I'll post a link when I'm next on a computer rather than phone.

Otherwise to really do much about space you would have to root (voids warranty, not for everyone). Tell us a bit more about your phone (gsm/cdma, network, current software) and we may be able to say more.

If the thing you wanted to clear was the dalvik cache, forget it. You can only do that when rooted, or by doing a factory reset, and it is rebuilt when you reboot. So you've already done that by factory resetting, and have seen that it didn't help.

OK, if you are running a GSM phone (uses a SIM card - if you are outside North America it's going to be GSM) then you can find the 2.3 upgrade near the bottom of this list: Shipped ROMs. It's a ROM Update Utility (RUU), a windows .exe, which you can find inside the zip file. The zip contains instructions on how to use it if I recall correctly.

This will do a factory reset in the process. It should work on most GSM Desires. It will also remove network apps and branding from the software.

Whether it will help with storage depends on what apps you have. Apps with a large library component, such as Google Earth, will use a lot less space when moved to SD using this than with Froyo. Apps that don't contain libraries will be the same size. So whether it will help or not will depend on what your apps are. But without rooting it's the only thing I can think of that will make much difference. Otherwise it's just a matter of removing apps or clearing up any wasted app data (such as duplicated contacts) - use the manage applications menu to see whether any apps are using excessive amounts of data.

Root & realise the full potential of your phone. Everything you need to know is contained in the All Things Root section of this forum with easy to follow guides. Read, re-read & read them again before you do anything.

Rooting in itself will not give you more storage but it unlocks the door to things that will give you more space.

While Hadron is correct that rooting voids warranties, there can't be many Desires still covered by the original 2 year warranty.

Thanks for the help guys, but I am going to get my sister's old phone (Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc) but it has lower phone storage and I am going to have to deal with it until my mom agrees to getting me an iPhone 4.
